My wife is starting to vocalize her concerns over my project spending.
I have several projects in the works. All require buying small misc parts.
I have a couple of projects that use V belts.
I have some old finish mower V belts that broke.
If I could splice them together it would be good enough for these projects.
And I wouldn't have to buy so many V belts. That gets expensive after a while.
After all the pulleys and pillow block bearings and shafts, I need to save money somewhere.
One lovejoy coupling set me back almost $20.

A long time ago I substituted cotton rope for a V belt on a big fan.
Just wanted to see it spin. Old 4' airshaft ventilation fan from a coal mine.
Slip a lot till it got up to speed. Then just sat there and ran.

Could V belts be half lap spliced or some other way.

Thanks.

I saw a product on an auto show on TV where the guy cut a fan belt in half and then used this tube of glue to stick back together and then sprayed it with some type of actavator. 3 guy's tried to tear it back apart. They couldn't. Wish I could remeber the name of the product. I'll try to remeber.

Probably a decade ago I saw a universal V-Belt. It's for emergancy repairs and you cut it to the size you need. From what I remember, it had a metal plate that held the two ends together, but I forget any details.

I remember seeing a belt my dad had spliced using fence wire like a staple but looped all the way with the ends twisted together. TSC sells staples for flat belts that might work on a v-belt. Remember all of the strength is in the outside band. If you want to try gluing, you could cut (or sand) a very long taper, at least through the strength band, to give more surface area for the glue to hold.
I have some Power Twist link belts on some of my tools that work pretty good and can be adjusted to different lengths. Each piece interlocks with the next 2.
Be careful. Especially avoid creating a heavy metal end on a whipping broken splice.

Have you considered flat belts like were used in days gone by. They are easy to splice. There are different ways to splice them too.

There is a type of V-belt that is held together with a metal pin with a head on both ends like rivet. You can make them any length you want.

McMaster-Carr has them in their catalog under adjustable length V-belts.
I don't know what the power transmission values are, I am sure they are not as high a an endless V-belt.

There used to be a place nearby where you could get belts for cheap.
These were good belts. Long lasting. Never had a problem with one.
But the place moved and changed a lot after the move.
I guess I need to check out and see what they got now.

I'll just keep using the old finish mower belts like I have.
Wrap it around the pulleys, cut it to size, then take it in and get a belt that size.
Works great for stuff like that.
