And what have I got myself into, is it worth saving? I rescued this out of an old leaky shed and got it home and in my building before the wife got home this evening so I'm safe so far. It's all there, just some broken idler springs and surface rust, the fertilizer boxes are still good, the hoses and the nozzles between the opener discs will have to be replaced. Looks like a mountain of work, might have to wait till the end of summer to tackle this one if anybody thinks it's worth the work.

Yea, I'm sure it's older than the #70 or the #71s, and I'm sure Bill can tell me what it is and when it's made as soon as he gets back and sobers up from his trip to Thunder over Lou.:D:D, I'm sure he's in the crowd partying his heart out.:D

Thunder Over Louisville? ME? Are you serious? I went out on the Belle of Louisville for year I of Thunder and haven't been back. Those folks are CRAZY. A million people (on both sides of the river) jammed into such a relatively small bit of real estate, sub 40 degree weather tonight, and 4 to 5 hours of traffic jam when it's over. It takes just a little more that the worlds largest fireworks display to get me in a crowd like that!

I'll see enough on the late news to satisfy me.

I have been outside watching some of the fighter planes fly over while the air show is going on though. A staging area for the helo's is over my place. Good show here!

That's a 24-B. There was a 24 and a 25. The 25 is a hill drop planter and the 24 is a drill planter. (Hill drop plants ***-----***-----***-----***, Drill plants *--*--*--*--*, * = a seed) Once upon a time, corn was hill dropped, but by the time that planter came along, the hill drop variant's were used mostly to plant cotton or peanuts. The 24/25 was produced at the same time as the #70 & #71's. They were a different breed of planter targeting a slightly different customer. The 24/25 was considered an "economy unit planter". They have shoe openers on the seed drop instead of the standard disc openers on 70/71's. I see yours need new openers. They're available in stainless steel which wear MUCH better. The seed drop tubes and fertilizer drop tubes are now available through Deere as a rubber hose with all the nessicary hardware to install. MUCH better plan! The original galvanized tubes deteriorated almost instantly when fertilizer came in contact with them. Also, that one is mounted on an OEM Deere toolbar, the original hitch no doubt. They use the same "type B" seed plates as all the rest of the Deere plate planters (inc 70/71's) Most parts should still be available through Mother Deere. A GOOD 2-row 24-B will bag $650 to $900.

If it's not worth YOUR while, it is sure worth MY while to rejuvinate them. I'll take 'em off you hands if they get in your way!

Thanks, I thought you'd know what it is, you talking about the shoe openers that need replacing or the disc openers, or both? I just hauled it home and put it away so I haven't looked it over much, but it had the rubber tubes on the fertilizer drop with a metal part between the disc openers that is rusted away, probably part of the original galvanized parts. There is a set of shoes on E-Bay, will check the #s to see if they will fit. I'll probably have more snags along the way and be picking your brain for more answers. I'm sure there are others that will help keep me out of too much trouble too, till the wife checks the shed.
I did the Thunder thing one year also and now I'm content watching it from fourty five miles away on TV, lot more cozy and not near the scramble when it's over.

Yeah, I was referring to those "sled runner" looking openers. They're about 50% worn away from new. They might still work, but it will have a hard time staying consistant with planting depth when worn like that.

The closest I'll get to any involvement in any of this years Ky Derby Festival is to play in the KDF Golf Scramble on the 21st. With my golf game, I'm sure they'll keep all the aircraft grounded that day. NO ONE is safe when I have a driver in my hands!
