Not sure if this is the right place to ask this but I am looking at a 1978 IH Dump, 21,000 gvwr. 70,000 miles, 345 V8, not all rotted out. He's asking $4,600. Anybody ever have one or any experiences with one? I always heard that the 345 IH engine was bulletproof.

It sounds pretty high for that old. Does it have hydraulic drum brakes and 2 piece wheels? It’s too old for my taste. I’ve got a Topkick dump truck and I wouldn’t want one of the older c70 truck.IMG_6987.JPG

Yes, Hydraulic brakes and split rims.

I guess as long as you don’t have to put a tire on it they’ll be ok but good luck finding someone that can/will do it.

You can get tube-less Daytons to replace those tube type rims. I have them on two of my vehicles, I got too old to break down the tube type with the lock rim. 9-20 becomes 10-22.5 and 10-20 becomes 11-22.5 Good recaps on the rear axle and some used, but not "Old" tires on the front would work for you. I swapped the tires and rims off a storage trailer a friend had. It wasn't a road-worthy trailer, but the tires and rims were good.

Very nice S - Series IH, what is it? 1700or 1800 .
The 345 and 392 IH engines were very good, easy to work on with the till hood.
From the picture I would say 4600 is a good price.

I have a local truck tire shop that will do it. It has current PA inspection but will probably need tires next inspection. The quoted me $230 a tire.

I believe it's an 1824. I have a pic of the ID plate.

Are you in a GVW enforced state? My topkick weighs 12,000 so you’d only have about 4 tons of capacity. You need about 30,000 or at minimum 26,000 to be useful. The truck does look well taken care of.

I plan on keeping it local. I know the PA creeper cops have portable scales but as long as I can carry 4-5 tons I'll be happy. The truck will just be for personal use.
