Hello All,

Newbie here, well new to a International tractor. Here's the story, I have a neighbor that has told me if I want his International 1066 I can have it but it needs some repairs. I have looked at the tractor and it looks in decent sharp for a 1972 Farmall 1066, tires are ok, loader is in good shape and the motor is strong. Here comes the issues, I guess the torque amplifier is gone in it, and the steering and brakes are sometimes wacky. Since I have no experience with the tractor I have a few questions.

1. will the tractor move with the Torque amplifier out? Since I haven't started the tractor or tried to move it I don't know if it on the low, high side or both. If its out on only the low side, can the tractor be used for doing chores like running a haybine, bale grinder, baler etc?

2. Now I understand that this tractor has two pumps to run the hydraulic system. One for the outlets, 3 pt hitch etc, and one that runs the steering, brakes and T-A. If this pump is weak, I'm guessing the steering and braking system will go out too. Is there a way to bypass it to at least get it on a trailer to get it home? ie use the back system to power the front system.

3. does the community think putting a few thousand dollars into the tractor would be worth it? I'll done the work myself, even if it needs to be split but is this tractor worth it? A quick search in my area shows a 1066 or 100+ hp tractors that vintage still over $5000 or more. Let me know what you all think.

Thanks

That tractor needs to be split and repaired.
It's not that hard of a job, it does require floor space and tools.
New TA's and hydraulic pumps aren't cheap but they aren't that bad either.
I am amazed that a 1066 with a strong engine and OK tires hasn't been sold for at least a few thousand dollars.

First off :welcome: to TBN.

As LouNY said.
Try run move tractor on its own power first before deciding to spend coins and time, and if you could hook up rear attachment listen watch pto.
Does it have cab?

So, if a TA goes out on these tractors, the tractor won稚 move? If the MCV pump and valve are woren out will that effect the TA as well? Can it be just way out of adjustment?

Yes to the cab

Thanks again

A bad TA normally only takes out the low range part, the MCV valve can effect many things.

So the tractor will move only in high range? Sorry like I said newbie with a 1066. Im trying to find out if I can drive the tractor into a trailer or do I need to winch it on. No one every says the tractor drives in high range only, people only say the TA needs to be repaired 😝

Just so you guys know, the tractor in buried in a snow bank 4 or so deep so I can稚 get at it yet. Just researching if it might be worth my time.

The nature of the TA failure will determine if the tractor will move or not. If the sprag is intact the tractor will drive in TA mode. If the direct drive clutch is intact and there is pressure at the MCV it will drive in direct.
Steering and brake oil supply is downstream from the MCV and its pump. A complete pressure test of the MCV circuits followed by an appropriate MCV, pump and TA overhaul may well cure the steering and brake issues.
I would say based on the info provided the tractor is absolutely worth repairing.

Edit: a TA repair will require a double split.

You might what to check/search and maybe joint this forum: AgTalk Home - Category & forums listing
The people on that forum mostly deal with big farm equipment like the 1066 and up. They could possibly tell you the best places to get replacement parts and or how to fix the T/A.
