International B414
Hello All!

I have recently acquired an international B414 tractor early 70s late 60s, the unit runs great however I am having an issue with the clutch remaining slightly engaged when I step on the pedal but only when there is a load on against the tires. At first when I bought the unit I had trouble with the PTO not disengaging with the second stage of the clutch. This proved to be the clutch pedal had come loose from the connecting rod that goes into the clutch housing. I have had the inspection cover off and sprayed some penetrating oil on the bearings in hopes it would assist with the clutch disengaging from the transmission but no such luck. The gap is set correctly on the clutch, and the pedal is also correct. To best describe what is happening is if I am not preforming any work and just need to change gears I can push the clutch in and change gears no issues, however if I am plowing with the bucket, snow blowing, or scooping with the bucket when I push the clutch in the tractor does not fully disengage and still moves very slowly but enough that the brakes will stop it, the only way I can then change gears is by killing the engine going to neutral and then restart and go on my way. Does anyone have any ideas what I can check or am I in for a clutch rebuild? The previous owner has had no issues with it and I used it for 3 months without any either until the clutch adjustment but the way I see it by making that adjustment I would have made the clutch disengage more if anything.

Thanks

Just a wild idea. Some clutch pedals have a return spring. If that is the case with your application, the spring maybe broke, missing or unhooked. Just something you might want to check out.

check under the bellhousing for the inspectioncover...open that and check if all3 fingers is at the same distance from the releasebearing ? If not ....you can adjust it !

First Phillip has a good point. Is the pedal being retracted all the way by a spring so when you set the free play you are not wasting pedal travel because the pedal is down a bit..

Worn bushing supporting the clutch rod that supports the release bearing(s) can waste pedal travel.

Try moving the rod the pedal rotates to see if there is any play between the bushings and the shaft. You could even have two shafts, one for the pedal and an other for the release bearing.

If you keep operating it like this you risk having the shifter forks jump out of alignment and you could be stuck in one gear or worse two gears which locks the transmission.

Since you have the benefit of an inspection cover, you should be able to watch the release bearing as you start depressing the pedal. The travel needed by the release bearing to release the clutch is quite small compared to the pedal movement so any slop is serious.

Thanks, the spring is working and the fingers are set correctly I verified this ensuring it was set to the shop manual. Everything seems tight with little to no play, since I made the last adjustment to get the PTO to disengage there is very little pedal free-play. When blowing the driveway today it continued to act up however it went away when I kept the bucket pretty well level with the front of the tractor (I would guess 2-3 ft off ground). Does that make sense? Would the extra pressure from the weight positioning of the bucket make a difference? Thanks again to all the responses.

Right. It would be most helpful to know the resolution to these issues. Tim sir you may need to start a new thread as this one seems by the wayside. Wish I could help, good luck
