Not sure if this is the correct group to ask and new to this forum.

Tractor - old farmall international 856 diesel tractor (95+ engine hp).

Last weekend, while turning steering wheel heard loud whining/grinding noise and difficult to turn with intermittent power steering. While raising lowering shredder hear same. Fluid levels are good.

Today, no power steering and very weak lift when raising shredder.

Wondering if hydraulic pump is out? Any other suggestions and estimate cost (range is ok. Ie. >$500, >$1000, etc... to repair)?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Read somewhere once the hydraulic pump can loose prime, and if you overfill slightly it will help to reprime. Tried it today and ran the tractor for several hours shredding. Leaked some hydro trans fluid from the front (power steering pump maybe) but it seems to be working now (Turns fine and shredder deck and wings lift). Will update in a few days when I run it again.

When was the last hydraulic filter change? Steering and hitch function comes from two different pumps and circuits, but the oil is all filtered by one element.

Hey Rick...thanks for the input. I inherited the tractor and have been running it a few years. My guess is it has been many years since it has been replaced. Curious if you know the difficulty level of this?

South Texas here.....going to try and change out the filter today.

Any chance there could be air intrusion causing this? I also slightly overfilled the hy-trans fluid, which I hear isn't an issue in these, and fluid starting leaking from the front end (underneath radiator area). Ugh. What did I do?

Overfilling didn't cause the leak, which is apparently from one of the oil cooler lines or the cooler itself.

Changing the hydraulic filtered helped. Steering and hydraulics seem to work fine now. However, can't seem to get the cover to seal well enough to keep from leaking. I used the gasket that came with the filter and tightened it down well. Cleaned both surfaces well too. Any thoughts?

Also, I found a small spring and a 1/2 inch metal sleeve in the cavity where the filter is. A little curious where these go.
