Need a little advice or input.

I've been given an International 46 baler. It's been sitting in the barn for a few years, but was working fine when parked. The problem is, it's about 120 miles from me. I don't have a trailer capable of hauling it. I was debating putting good tires on it, repack or replace wheel bearings, then tow it home. The trip would be all rural roads and a slower speed would be fine.

Does anyone know whether or not the 46 has wheel bearings or bushings? My online searches haven't provided this info and I don't want to travel that far just to look for myself.

Any thoughts on my plan?

Thanks

I found my answer. It has bearings.

Now, should I try to tow it home or not?

Why not. Just take your time and service everything before you leave. Keep the speed down and take your time driving.

I bought a Massey Ferguson 124 baler a few years ago that's the size of your IH 46. Towed it home about 30 miles using my 2001 F150 with no problems. Used the back roads, kept the speed around 25 mph and was careful to keep the right wheel out of the ditch. That 124 has a two-position swing hitch---one position for towing on the road, the other position for baling. I suppose your IH 46 has a similar setup.

Good luck.

If you do a good job of servicing the bearing and the tires are good, there's no reason why you can't tow it at decent speeds. I would air the tires up to maximum pressure allowed...nothing builds heat in a tire like flexing the sidewalls from running low air pressure and excess heat is very damaging to tires.

I would assume that baler has grease fittings in the hubs. I would carry a grease gun with you. Make sure you know how to pack barrings before you go. I have a lisky barring packer that I love, much easier than the palm of the hand method.

I have a new holland 67 with wheel bushings but I pulled it 50 miles and burned up the bushings and now need new bushings... I wish I brought with a trailer
