IH 240
Hello All,

I have just bought a 240 International utility, it has set for some time in a shed and appears a valve or (2) has stuck or...?? It cranks fine but is blowing back through the carb starving the other cylinders, hope to do a process of elimination check on it today or tomorrow. I wish the previous owner had not tried to start it after setting so long, but I had no control over it. My main question is, does anyone have any knowledge / experience with these tractors? Just curious if there is any weak spots mechanically that I need to look for? The tractor has a 2 point hitch on rear, and came with the original 2 point plow, disc, sycle bar mower, and draw bar hitch, was glad to see it was original and not all cut and welded on. If I can figure out the pic posting here I will share a pic or 2.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum. I do not believe these tractors had any weak spots. I would think that the valves are not seating correctly, causing the it to blow back through the carb.

The tractor looks to be in real good shape, and its great that you got the 2 point equipment with it too.

What is that old engine in the background on the first photo? Looks to be a Reid, but its hard to tell.

Got one of those rascals myself, and outfitted the same, with a couple more attachments. Pop bought it in '71, and other than doing a major OH on it, and stripping one wheel hub on it, it's pretty well been bullet proof. Those C-123 engines are great. VERY easy on gas..!! After using other tractors with a split transmission, that would have been a good option on these, and power steering, but overall, a sweet little tractor. It uses about half the amount of fuel that my 3 cyl. Ford 2000 uses, doing the same type jobs.

Keep your eye's peeled for a Fast Hitch carry-all, and the one piece 3 pt. conversion. Pricey, but much handier than the slide in tong type conversion. And a lot of that depends on being at the right place, at the right time. The 240 has the larger category Fast Hitch then the Super C's had. Super C equipment will work, but it is like 1/8" to 3/16" shorter in height than the 240's. We just made some spacers out of flat strap with a turned down tang to keep it from going on in to the receiver tubes. The stops on the attachment tongs keep them from backing out, and losing them.

Once you get it up to snuff, I think you'll really like it..!!
