The really interesting thing is if you read your post fast it makes perfect sense and you hardly even notice the tyyypos. Dave PS, I gues that rules out pig latin /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Yikes!!

I wonder if this has anything to do with the apparent decline in the ability of younger folks to spell words correctly - maybe they are learning not to care because it doesn't matter??

I hope not!

Been busy, Gary??

You must be, because otherwise you'd of noticed this thread Research that was posted in this forum earlier this week! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who has done this. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

"Whole word" reading was one of the ideas in Bill Clinton's Goals 2000 education program. Research I've seen says that it is very effective for those with a established reading foundation but far less effective for those learning to read for the first time. I've often wondered without a phonics foundation and proper letter placement, how would you learn new words?

Some who buy into Outcome Based Education go so far as to suggest that "Johnny" shouldn't fail his spelling test simply because he didn't arrange all the letters in the traditional way, as long as he uses all the right letters within the word. I'm sure Noah Webster would disagree.

When my wife and I were teaching 5th grade Sunday school, those kids could figure out word scrambles about twice as fast as the adults!

Actually, Garry, I have been. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif At least when one Gary plagarizes from another, it's a Garry who points it out. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I sent this in email to a number people I know and one, my lovely former spouse, who suffers from dyslexia, was the only one who reported having difficulty with it. She said that it was almost impossible for her to decipher. Given that dyslexia can mix any of the letters in a word, including the first and last, that's really not too much of a surprise.

On a personal note, I never even thought about her dyslexia when I emailed this to her or I probably wouldn't have included her in the mailing. In my defense, this is a woman with a BS in Business, an MBA and, in December, a BS in Accounting en route to a CPA. Since she's done all of this without benefit of any "special" consideration for her dyslexia (she refuses it) even though the university not only offers but encourages it, I hope you can see how this oversight happened so easily.

You have no need to apologize for anything! I only pointed out the fact that someone else had posted the same thread a little earlier in the week. And considering that you're usually pretty good at noticing various topics throughout TBN World, I figured you had just missed it because you've been busy. A guy misses just a day or two, and it's almost impossible to be able to review what's been posted just because of the quantity.

An interesting sidebar to this thread is that about a half hour ago, I received the same article from my sister. Of course, my reply to her was,.... "I keep telling you that you HAVE to use spell checker!!" /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
