Hi

My B414 transmission has a little problem. It will not go in 4th gear. It is like something blocks it. What could it be? Could it be a stuck fork or spring etc? I looked at the transmission cover and it seems a lot of work to remove it. Have you ever experienced that problem before? Thanks

Yah. My Farmall Super A tranny won't go into 1st gear. Most likely a problem with the forks. Removing the tranny cover is pretty simple since this is such a small tractor. Don't have time to work on it now, but I'll get to it in a few months.

Your B414 is a lot heavier tractor so I expect the tranny cover is plenty heavy. It'll probably take an engine hoist to handle it.

I did have B-414 1963 before my Kubota and I had the same problem. It is not too bad to remove the cover, just put all speed to neutral and hi/lo lever on neutral too. Remove all the cover bolts and lift it carefully.
The problem is always in the rail under the cover where all the springs are mounted. Pay attention for the balls went you unbolt every thinks. You will probably find a broken spring, a missing ball, or a ware out rail. You may need new parts or welding depending of the damage.
Install the cover back is not a big deal, but put it on is quite tricky. You must align all forks with the synchromesh sliders in the trany and make sure that your shifters works well (speed and hi/lo). You can put 2 bolts to try it without the engine running, to make sure that the cover do not move.
Depending on you mechanic skill it should be easy to do.
