What is the advantage of getting a separate insurance policy for a tractor? If my garden tractor ( worth 3000.00 ) gets crushed by a tree or some other freak accident my homeowners insurance pays for it. Is there a difference in a big tractor that needs some special policy? I thought that personal property on your own land was covered by homeowners.. Any knowledge on this topic?

Over here in Ontario, homeowners only covers up to a certain size. It may not cover you if you run over to pop a rock out for a neighbour either, especially if he pays you somehow...

Your tractor is covered under home owners insurance, as long as it STAYS on your property. Take it off property to use some where else, you will need an additional insurance policy.

My tractor would have been covered by my homeowners. I would have had to increase the personal property limits (values). However, my policy only covers if it's on my property, if the tractor leaves the property (such as going out in the road when snow plowing) and gets hit by a car it would not be covered. If I left the property to plow a neighbor it won't be covered. Anytime the tractor leaves my property it wouldn't be covered. Same with attachments. If I took my tractor to a friends house to clear a field and had to leave the tractor for a few days and it got stolen, homeowners wouldn't cover the loss. Submitting a claim against someone that hit my tractor while off property would probably get lawyers involved in order to collect. I have my tractor and implements insured for 30K. Coverage includes tire damage, theft, full glass coverage for the cab and much more. To have no insurance for 30K worth of equipment would be foolish. Note that my policy is a Physical Damage Insurance for the tractor and implements. It is not a liability insurance to protect me from being sued while on other property. That is a separate policy. Not all homeowners insurance companies will cover high value tools and equipment. My homeowners personal property values are almost the same value as the house due to all the equipment and tools I use in my garage.

The OP should check on that with his insurance company.
My home owners does not cover my tractor.
I added an Inland Marine policy for tractor and attachment coverage.

My homeowners covered on my property but if when blading I pulled onto the county road and was hit by a gravel truck, no coverage. My farm policy now covers all my equipment up to 200 miles from my farm.a neighbor tried getting by on his homeowners and his large articulated tractor (fortunately an older tractor) was destroyed when a hydraulic line burst and fueled an inferno while he was roading. Surprisingly his homeowners did cover the fire call but nothing on the tractor.

First of all, you really need to talk with your insurance carrier. I spent months (September till the end of November) chasing insurance for mine and it was difficult. Different carriers have different coverage. I could give you a perfect description of my coverage, but it would be unsafe to assume another carrier has the same provisions. My basic coverage is different with the new carrier than it was before I switched.

Old carrier - Tractors fully covered for loss and liability on my property only. Period.

New carrier basic policy - One tractor is covered for loss and liability on my land, and for liability only when off my property. One tractor covered for loss and liability on my land and not covered at all while off my property. This carrier has a "25 Horsepower Rule". The Ford is 16 or 17 HP, so it automatically gets coverage the 32 HP Kubota does not.

To get liability coverage for the Kubota (actually covers both) I have a million dollar liability policy. For loss, there is a separate but cheap policy that covers up to $17K on the Kubota only. This is only possible because I never get paid for what I do off site. One neighbor, an old maid never even says "Thanks", but I know she needs the help. I mow here at home and for one widow. Snow removal is here, a nearby brother-in-law, two widows, an old maid and our church. If I were to get paid, it would require a commercial policy.

As frustrating and time consuming as it was, the effort was worthwhile. We ended up with the tractor coverage we wanted and after shifting the auto and home to the new carrier we spend slightly less than we had been paying. We now have better home and auto coverage as well.

Along the way, I received ballpark prices from $650 to over $1,000 for separate policies to cover the liability only - but they didn't materialize.

Exactly the same here - also added all my implements which didn't make much of a difference at all.

I had liability on a new dual-sport motorcycle. When I went on vacation it was always in the bed of my truck. I assumed for a year or two it was
covered if stolen out of the truck. Turns out it wasn't so had to get comp added to the liability policy.
