Insulating the pump house

I'm tearing down the old, nasty insulation in the pump house and would like a recommendation on what to put up. I'm not at all familiar with insulation. The insulation would remain exposed. The old stuff had a tinfoil type backing material which was on the exposed side which I kind of liked. Seemed more durable than paper. Any recommendations appreciated. Here is a photo of the insulation (all the electrical components have been upgraded and are up to code so no comments on the old stuff please).

If your studs are 16" on center, use the 14.5" wide rigid stryofoam panels 2-4" thick. You could caulk around the edges to hold them in place. They are not affected by moisture. They are cheap and will not make you itch.

Another choice would be fiberglass batts in protective "bags". They contain the same pink glass as standard kraft paper or foil faced insulation, but cost more.

It's hard to do it wrong. In your shoes I have gone to the HD and purchased from what they have, usually the paper (actually a tarpaper) faced roll. Also nothing wrong with sheeting over the top of it with a thin plywood, hardboard, pegboard, or even sheetrock. Insulation is very cheap to buy and will last forever if protected with sheeting.

My wife teased me about insulating and then drywalling our garage until the white paint went on and the additional flourescent fixtures went up. The garage has become a clean, bright, warmer, and quiet place being finished. The neighbors are jealous.

I work for a city and our wellhouses and pumphouses are made of concrete block painted white on the inside. Nice to see what's going on when your water stops working at midnight in a rainstorm.

Get a quote for sprayed foam insulation, generally not much more than foam pannels and it makes for a tight seal everywhere. Will also adhere to the concrete base.
One caution is to wrap all wires and plumbing fittings with plastic or paper before the foam is sprayed as otherwise everything will be foam coated.
Sprayed foam should result in a totally airtight pumphouse making heating very economical.
Foam about 2" to get about R-16.
Also foamed insulation seals out moisture.
Heck you could probably heat with a 100 watt light bulb.

Thanks for the suggestions. I kind of like the idea of the insulation in bags. Don't like that itchy fiberglass.

you can get plastic faced "in bags" fiberglass...

or just put more paper faced up and some vapor barrer over it to protect it.
