Any ideas on how to install fencing in shale? I have a post hole digger on the tractor but can only get about 6-12" before I hit the shale ledge. Any ideas on how to get deeper or install a fence in this type of environment. The intent is for horses, but can make it electric or even metal tube. Any rock boring devices that can be attached to tractor?

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

I think it might be one of the times you are just going to have to do some manual work.

I'd get the PHD in as deep as you can and then hire a pneumatic breaker. They are bloody hard work to operate and make a **** of a lot of noise but they will get through it.

Another thing, if you use electric I find you can dig the holes down a lot less than you have to if you do wooden. The electric means the horses can't push it around.

If you have lots of fence to do you could hire a mini digger with a wacker on the front. They shake the digger around like crazy though.

Econ, I Installed fence for 12 yrs. If you have a 2500 watt generator or a long enough X-tension cord. Call rental yard and ask for a Bosch, Mdl 11304K, nick named The Brute Breaker Hammer. Only weighs 130# but will cut right thru shale. Comes mounted on a Dolly. Needs 120v/15amps, come with a 12' power cord. P.S. wear gloves and eye protection!! Frank

Hi econ,
Have would consider coring the shale about 1' deep and epoxy some 1-1/4 pipe. You can rent the core drill and the pipe is very affordable from a steel supply house.

Hey All,

Just build a different kind of fence.

For example if you have access to rock you can build various kinds of rock cribs - fill them with rock and use steel posts in between as you can probably get them in far enough to cover the flange.

Lots of ways to skin a cat!

Hey All,

Tool you need to build some fence in rock country! If you don't have rock don't do it. If you do it works well.

One method is to pound 4 steel posts in the ground - wrap with hog wire - criss cross across the top with wire and fill with river rock or any rock 6 to 10"+ in diameter. Put these cribs as far apart as comfortable and use steel posts in between. Built lots of fence this way.

An alternative is to use few big rocks on a different kind of platform. Vertical wood post set in ground even if only 12 in. Braces come done from post at about 45 deg from the line of the fence into the ground. Put brace parallel to ground about 6 in off ground all the way around the triangle made by the posts and ground. Put some interior bracing or just a wood floor and then put one big rock on the floor. Also works well. I've built a few of these as well.

If you don't have rock you can always build differently. If you must use wood posts and sink them into the ground then spread them far apart 40-50 ft and use high tensile (there is high tensile barb as well) with some stays inbetween. If you know how you can brace the top of a post against the base of the same post and it will be stout. No need for multipost corners.

Once again there are many ways to skin a cat. All it takes is some creativity and a willingness to know that the tried and true is not always the best.

there is a tool that will do what you want. its a rock drill, its similar to a 60# jack hammer but it drills rock and or concrete. One of these should blast through shale with no problem then just use 2" pipe for posts. It is hard work using one of these ( trust me on that). using a chipping hammer or breaker means digging big holes then having to fill em back in. You can find a rock drill at a contractor rental yard and you need a trailer type compressor to run one they need a lot of air.
