Came across the spec sheet and company info who builds these tranny's for John Deere & other tractors. Ha...I would never have guessed this equipment was manufactured oversea's. This would explain why John Deere put their own crappy fluid in the tranny's because it is cheaper to ship & less cost to fill them with crap fluid.

I knew the K46 & k57 are almost identical except the K57 has a little bit more umff/torque from the motor & piston to axle. Still not confident I can order the rebuild kit for a K57 and shtuff it in my K46...who know's.

Enjoy...

You don't like Deere fluid I take. Do you feel that the quality of the original fluid lead to failures? Kanzaki isn't exactly a nickle and dime outfit. I've seen the Kanzaki name on transaxles before, but have no idea myself what tts are built domestically or Japan or China unless it is noted on the tag.

If I'm reading this right, TuffTorq products are made in the US, though the company appears to be part of Yanmar.

Culture - Tuff Torq

We are committed to being an American made product and, thus, we are driven to ensure our product quality reflects this heritage. Established in 1989 by Kanzaki Kokyukoki Mfg. Co. Ltd of Amagasaki, Japan, Tuff Torq Corporation was created to be a domestic manufacturing base for drive systems for the lawn and gardening industries.

Tuff Torq Corporation is part of the Yanmar Global family of companies and draws upon their decades of experience to develop the premium product lines to best support our customers. Through the philosophy of Yawaragi and the drive of our YWK efforts, we are continuing to improve our process, quality and product performance."

The K46 (I think they call it a K42 or something like that, but it's the same thing) in the JD 100 series is notorious for failures. I actually have 2 in back right now, both with failed transaxles, both with less than 200hrs.

I haven't so far. Just completed a tear down on my JD L120 to replace anything & everything as this tractor has 575 hours on it. When I pulled the tranny (K46) the fluid was somewhat clear. I bought the tractor at 330 hours and want to believe the previous owner replaced the tranny and then sold it to me.

Drained the fluid 2-day drip and then replaced with Tuff Torq fluid shipped in a 1-gal jug. When I got the new engine in, I had to wait on the drive belt/idlers. When it was all replaced, the tranny made a slight growl, the cleared up in seconds to work pretty dang good.

I had allowed $1,800 in my overhaul budget to just replace the K46 with the K66 kit offered online. Then I thought, why? I don't go up any hills and don't pull any attachments so I'm keeping it just like it is. Found out that Sears carries the K46 a lot cheaper than Tuff Torq. Still at $600 to replace rather than rebuilt for $450 is a better choice when the time comes if it ever does.

Had to post some more on the immediate performance with the new 27 HP engine. Please follow what I'll do my best to describe...

We have a drainage ditch that runs along the side of our property. I'll mow this ditch parallel going with never across. This ditch is about 6ft wide and 18in deep. I drove across this ditch several times in the past testing the tractor and it would groan as the governor did its job keeping the RPM as the rear wheels came up out of this ditch.

NOW...I have the tractor at a tic above idle to test & achieve the same feat across the ditch. It performed like it was nothing. This is more torque and I do worry if the larger engine with more torque an HP may completely trash the K46 transmission over time.

Currently, I mow 2 acres. In the summer months the grass will almost get away from me getting too tall. The engine would begin to bog so I had to mow half strips that took twice as long to do in the hot sun. We'll see how she does now that we have the HP to pull those blades.

I see a couple of current ebay listings for around $400 that claim to be new, showing them in boxes. Shipping included. You have to watch them though since the axle ends can be different for different wheels.

I seem to remember (maybe incorrectly) that It was a joint venture between Yanmar and John Deere
