Every time I start looking into these systems I can never justify their cost. Our little wood stove heats the house just fine 80-90% of the time. It is only when we get cold into the 10/20's for a long period that the stove cannot keep up. Those conditions do not happen often so it is hard to justify spending $5,000+ for limited use. Another wood stove on the other side of the house would be cheaper for us.
Why don't you go with an out-side wood boiler?Keeps the mess out doors and the fire hazard. We just installed one at my sons house, domestic hot water and two additional out-buildings.

Duffster I wish I could do what you are suggesting, mess in the garage, walk out in sock feet to fill/check on it, move the heat to all areas of the house. Off the top of my head I think it was a company called greenwood industries that I was looking at for information that had a ul listed boiler for indoor use.
Hey Duffster, I live in Wisconsin too. I put a wood fired boiler in one of my attached garages. It has worked well so far. I am pleased and would do it agian. PM me for particulars if you wish.
I have a Tarm Solo 40 gasification boiler in my garage. It heats a 750 gallon storage tank in my basement which then distributes the heat to my house via in-floor radiant and baseboard. The storage tank is super insulated and it allows me to let the fire go out and still have heat.
The indoor gasification units are much more efficient than the outdoor wood boilers. They burn much cleaner and use a lot less wood. I heat my 4000 sq. ft. house in northern VT on roughly 6 cord per year, and that includes domestic hot water.
I have one to heat my shop of 2300sf and attached house, love it! Mine is also a "gasser". I second Dogballs advice on that link, hang out there for a while before you start spending$$. My boiler is a "Wood Gun" by Alternate Heating Systems in PA where they are made.
