Tractor
2004 Mahindra 6000 4x4
Why does the 4500 4wd have this type of pto and the 5500 4wd go with the live pto? It seems most current production tractors all come equiped with a live pto.
I dont understand why Mahindra would not make this tractor with a live pto.
Anybody have a good explanation on this? Also, there are two types of independent pto; mechanical or hydraulic am not sure which type the 4500 4wd has but am guessing it has the mechanical version. I have researched this a bit, but want to hear from someone with practical experience.
Thanks

I must have been looking at the 2 wheel drive models as they have live PTO not the 4wd xx00 series which are equiped with the independent PTO. Still, the question remains why the independent PTO on the 4wd series and live on 2wd?

Why?, i can't ansewre that but the diffrence is minamal, live pto tractor can be shifted and stoped and go pto will still run ,gear drive would have two stage clutch, hydro mostly single stage and hydro pedel controles tractor movment. Inde pendant is same only it can be engaged on the go electic hyd or just a hyd lever.no need to stop tractor, with live pto to engage no matter what trans. you'd have to stop the tractor, after pto is in gear the tractor can stop or go with no efect on pto but not vice versa. So in short the independant is a little better but not realy a big deal, most pepole stop to engage pto any way,to lower implment or what ever. now trans.driven pto can be a pain because any time you stop or start the tractor pto also stats and stops, not many of those being made anymore

I have the 4500 4WD with independant PTO. There are many varieties, but on these tractors the PTO clutch is engaged/disengaged with a lever instead of by mashing the clutch pedal all the way down. I like this better because I do not have to guage how far down to push the clutch to stop the tractor without stopping the PTO. I can also stop the PTO while the tractor is still moving. Chet

Thanks for the replys, I think I got it now.

Chet, if you have a ohhh s*%T moment and you needed to turn off the pto immediately you have to flip the lever rather than mash the clutch. I think my reaction would be to engauge the clutch, but I could break that habit if I go with this tractor.

I considered that also, but it did not take me long to get used to the setup, because I have not had a tractor with live or independant PTO before. I like it this way cuz if I mash the clutch down I do not have to worry about stopping the square baler unintentionally when it is full of hay and having to dig all the hay out of the bale feed chamber to get it going again. Could be a drawback if you wrap up something in a brushhog, but that is what shear pins are for I suppose. Chet
