There are two major chemistries I'm aware of - Lithium Ion and Lithium Iron.
Ion explodes, Iron does not. Ion holds a little better charge.
I keep one (A Lithium Iron HF special) in a Honda Civic that is run infrequently and the battery has been dying for years. Starts it every time.
