I have a YM2200 that uses the small fuel filter that go inside the clear plastic bowl. I replace them about three times a year but they aren't actually that cheap. I was thinking maybe totally removing that filter from the bowl and connecting a small cheap plastic in line filter. Has anyone successfully connected one of these type of filters on the line from the fuel tank to the engine or does it mess with the flow of the fuel?

Danny,

Budgeting maintenance parts is certainly understandable but I wouldn't remove or bypass the original fuel bowl system.

Other than the obvious 'at a glance' benefits where you can visually check for fuel contamination, it's a great problem solving device when it's necessary to bleed the fuel system (with the bleed cap screws at the top of the fuel body).

If I were to add an inline fuel filter I would do so between the tank and fuel valve...which might increase the filter element life to some degree.

Why not put one of the longer filter bowls on your tractor? The The bowls are 10-12 dollars and the filters are less than $5.

On this particular model the valve is bolted to the fuel tank so there isnt any room to put a filter there. I will most likely not put a different filter on there. I was just thinking and thought I'd ask if someone else had done it. For some reason I dont like messing with that bowl and filter. This filter and bowl gives me trouble at times when I change it out. I figured a small filter on the line from the filter to the engine would be easier to change when needed. I'll just leave it alone its not that big of deal anyway. Thanks

Why not put one of the longer filter bowls on your tractor? Well, I am not aware of the larger filter bowls. If I picture it right the bowl I got now is like 3" and the bottom of the bowl just misses my hydraulic lines, so I dont think a larger bowl would fit. I'm sure I still have the original bowl and it looks as if it will need to be replaced soon. I will be sure to look into what you mentioned. Do you have a link to that larger bowl and filter for me to take a look at?

When you said small fuel bowl, I thought you had the bowl that came on the YM2200 when it was new, about 2" long. There are 3 bowls that will fit your tractor, the 2" and there a 2 3/4" and a 3 1/2". If you are having trouble with it leaking theb the o-ring could be flattened out or it could be the wrong size. The bowl or the housing could also be cracked.

If you were concerned about the longgevity of the filter; then adding an inline filter between you tank and the existing filter would be the answer. It would be easily replaced and would give you extra filtration.

The advantage of the bowl configuration is that you can trap the water that can easily find its way into the system with bad results.

My Yanmar had an inline filter when I got it. It was a nuisance. Part of what the yanmar filter system provides is the shutoff so you can swap filters without spilling diesel. If you have an inline filter, you need to crimp the (probably old) fuel hose from the tank or else drain the entire system before you can swap filters. Just one more complexity added, to little benefit.

Like several other 'improvements' people put on these tractors, I think additional filtering isn't needed. Yanmar got it right in the initial design. Keep it simple!

From the YM240 manual: "For maximum filter life, sediment and water should not exceed 0.10 percent". That's a huge amount of rubbish, 3/4 ounce by weight, maybe a couple of tablespoons, added for every tank of fuel. If the manufacturer says the tractor will meet specs when fed that much garbage, continually, then our much cleaner fuel shouldn't need a second filter.

I assume everyone has the screen that goes just under the fuel tank cap. It seems more useful to me to catch water and debris at that point. This screen is much easier lift out and clean, compared to replacing a filter.
