Have any Canadian's here imported a tractor or in my case a Kubota TLB from the U.S.? I'm interested in buying a Kubota L45 or M59. There aren't very many used machines in Canada that I can find and the prices aren't bad when you convert in to CAD.

I bought my John Deere across the line down in Vermont back in 2006. I remember it being crucial that "Made in U.S.A." (or Mexico or Canada) appears on the identification plate otherwise duty is payable. Where are you located? There were a few other important details to consider in order to license the tractor for the road but that would vary from province to province.

I live in Manitoba we are not required to license off-road vehicles.

There are numerous Canadians on here that have imported from the U.S.

I have imported a compact tractor. You get stuck paying GST and HST ( or whatever it is in your province) when it crosses the border.

Many have gone over with a trailer, picked one up and came back. Gotta be clean ( little dirt ) and you get stuck with taxes. Not arduous but still work.

I used a customs broker who arranged transportation for me and it was dropped off near my home.

Have been looking at doing it again but the Cdn $ makes it challenging.

We aren't required to license off road vehicles here in Quebec either but to go on a public road they have to be plated or risk a fine.

In Manitoba, as long as you're not running it under a business, it's covered under the Home Owner Insurance. Farm use is not considered as commercial and not even a plate is needed.
If you have your farm operation registered under CRA, get an importer number. That way, you can import goods into Canada without paying taxes (PST in Manitoba). GST is refundable.
I'm not sure about the "Made in" label.

Must have changed the law since I inquired a few years ago.
The SQ informed me that ANY self powered vehicle capable of carrying a person needed to be plated by law.
In la Belle Province we have "P" plates for that purpose and you'll notice all tracked machinery sports the "P" vs the "W".
Wheeled loaders all need the costly "W".

As to off road, ATV's and snow sleds all need to be plated and insured but don't fall under the highway 'no fault' insurance scheme'

Another 'Quebec' quirk is that only stationary generators are exempt from fuel taxes. (hydro quebec runs many)
Don't get caught with off road in your CUT!

I've bought a few tractors in Canada and hauled several through Canada too...

I've never had to pay any duty or tax at all. All anyone on the border wanted going either way, was a clean tractor, NO dirt and that I had a receipt.

It's pretty much a wav on through for me, every time for me.

I assume, no import taxes may apply to used machinery.

You might want to check with Canada Customs first, before you even try to make a deal on a tractor. Mr.s Trump and Trudeau had a pissing contest and I think us little guys got the shaft. In other words, I think the rules have changed thanks to that pissing contest.
Assembled in USA isn't the same as Made in USA. You will still need to pay the taxes and maybe duty, too. A customs broker is a bonus and maybe you can get clarification from them about the costs of importing.
If you go to CC, then try to get a hold of the top dog at that branch, he/she will be right up on the rules.
