I did raised-bed gardening for a few years, too. Using the Dick Raymond method (the "DR" in Country Home Products' product name, like the DR Chipper, by the way), you can plant more densely than you would in conventional rows, partly because the bed is raised (better drainage and air circulation), and partly because access is so much better.

Forgot to mention another benefit to raised gardens is that the soil warms up quicker in the spring for earlier planting...something important in this part of the country. And, to extend my growing season well into October/November I create mini-greenhouses(basically frost protectors). Take some PVC and cut apprx. 6" lenghts...insert into the ground every 3 or 4' along the sides of the raised bed...take a smaller diameter PVC pipe(get the lenght that suits your bed width) and insert one end into the pipe in the ground and loop over to the opposite side of the garden. This creates a looped frame that when it's going to frost I simply drape some 6 mil plastic over the tubing to protect the plants. The tubing also serves as something for vine type plants to grow up on during the summer.
