Hello Tractor People!

Thank you for all the great responses about which implements to get for a new 50 HP Kioti tractor to do gravel road maintenance and brush work.

The dealer has some of the recommended implements but not all. Where would you look for such things as a gannon box, hydraulic rear blade, and 4-way bucket?

Someone recommend looking at good quality used equipment. A few other attachments on my wishlist might be good to find used. Please comment yeah or nay:

root grapple,
rotary tiller,
rotary mower,
flail mower

Warmly,

Ben

I always suggest finding a USED box blade, especially a heavy duty box blade. There are very few things that someone can tear up on a heavy duty box blade, and any bends, welds, breaks or wear can easily be seen with a quick inspection.

A brand new heavy duty box blade is very expensive. You can often find a used one for less than half the price of a new one.

Nice! Is there any reason to own both a flail mower and a rotary trimmer? I guess the later is cheaper, but is it better for hilly terrain and brush?

thank you sounds good. the dealer is recommending a bison box blade with hydraulically actuated rippers. i'm guessing that would not compare with the gannon box?

Yes, Bison builds some units that are comparable, to Gannon and Land Pride for the rear blades. Also check out Gearmore. Just be sure that you are comparing apples to apples. All of the mentioned manufacturers have different levels of implements. You can't go on just the name, but need to compare weights and adjustment capabilities. Here is another source for Bison for a good box blade and rear blade.

As much as you are going to spend, SHOP, SHOP, SHOP. ;)

Rotary Cutters, AKA Bush Hogs, are among the most indestructible of tractor implements. Very few parts, relative to a Flail Mowers. Only two blades to sharpen and only an angle grinder required for the job.

Flails have many, many more parts. "Blades" are carbide "teeth". Carbide is difficult to sharpen. Read up on Flails. There are hundreds of TBN threads on Flail Mowers ~~~~ your circumstances may warrant a Flail rather than a 'Hog.

Rotary Mowers are probably 95% of the market, Flails 5%.

Tillers are easy. Almost any small tractor can power a PTO tiller. If you only want a kitchen garden, consider a Ratchet Rake bucket attachment to open the ground. No PTO to fight and minimal space to store. The Ratchet Rake will be useful for your brush work.

Photos show Ratchet Rake on B3300SU.

Thank you Brian! Great advice... will keep shopping but need to decide soon. With all the rain we had in Nor Cal this winter and the warm weather we are already seeing a lot of green shoots everywhere and the roads washed out all over the place...
