I need some thoughts on putting an impact gun or electric drill on the front pulley bolt to turn over 3 cyl diesel. Probably not a good idea? Im not getting any fuel out of the injectors. I was wondering if this could help to free something up or build up enough pressure to move it along. Everything is bled but no fuels getting to the cylinders.

Probably not a good idea?

That would be my opinion, although I've never tried it. My first thought was "why would you want to use an impact wrench or electric drill instead of just the starter?" But then I'm guessing that you want to spin the engine faster and longer than the starter will do. I'd guess that very few electric drills have enough power to do that, and the impact wrench would be hammering instead of smoothly spinning the engine.

I'm with Bird. Impact gun's not gonna work. Guaranteed. If you can find a drill strong enough it'll probably take off your arm. My recommendation is use the starter. Crank for 15 seconds then wait for the starter to cool.

Pauly;

I tried an impact gun once to turn over a 4 cylinder Volvo. Broke the bolt off the crank. Seems the impact wrench pounded the bolt continuously while turning the motor. I'm with Bird, use the starter. If you need more speed you might trying towing the tractor. Good luck.

Like others have said...no impact wrench. Most likely will keep tightening bolt until it wrings off. If it won't start using the starter, you need to find the cause and fix it...:(

I figured the arm separation might be an issue. That certainly would make my carpal tunnel go away though. Problem is, i dont have a starter and thought there might be an alternative to pull starting. Need two people and last time i tore the **** out of my father-in laws lawn. I bled the filter and the pump but not getting any fuel up thru the injectors. I really dont know much about diesel pumps. Or personal safety for that matter!

Maybe a small gas motor with a good belt could be used (make sure the right direction!) or a large electric motor, but both have their drawbacks. Enough reduction via pulley's and almost anything will make it spin. Problem is you have to have enough reduction to be able to spin it, but enough speed to turn it fast enough.

If you had stuck injectors, which is what I think you are saying, and all the air was out of the lines, merely turning it over at all would have broken something, most likely the injection pump. Diesel fuel is incompressible, and something has to give if an injector won't open.

Richard has a current thread running with a similar situation. He finally found that a pin was missing at the coupling that drove the pump. Perhaps you have something similar. Tell us more about the engine.

This machine has sitting in a shed for 6 months waiting for me to get to it. Prior to that its been sitting outside for 1 or 2 years without being ran. I got it without a starter, so it makes diagnosing fuel problem a bit more challenging. I would buy a starter but theyre costly for this machine. If it will run good then ill run and get one that very day. I drained the fuel tank and replaced filter.(plastic filter bowl was shattered.(perhaps froze and cracked to bits!) I bled the filter and hand cranked the motor with a long handle wratchet trying to get fuel flow out of the injectors.(i didnt remove the injectors, just the lines). Im afraid to take them out. Im not experienced with diesel pumps at all. Other than that i dont know what else to do. Should i remove the injectors and clean em or bring em to a shop for testing?

I'm not a mechanic, but if you disconnected the fuel lines from the injectors and you cannot get fuel to come out through those lines, I would think you'd just be wasting your time to remove the injectors.
