Posthole Digger I'm so lucky....post hole digger

Re: I\'m so lucky....post hole digger

As someone else pointed out, lift the auger frequently while drilling. The auger can easily screw itself into the ground, and since these don't reverse, you need to unscrew it manually with a large wrench. I've heard that isn't fun.

Tell me about it!

I've got one of the TSC units for my BX-2200 (If you get one -- I needed to bore another pair of holes in the boom just outboard of the last original set in order to clear the ground with the auger full up).

I just lost the auger in heavy clay last week, punching 9" holes for deck footings. So there was a brief time-out while I made a 'T' wrench from some inch and three-quarter pipe and steel rod. At least I ended up with a wrench that has the handle at waist height, and a sliding 3-foot handle, so it wasn't that hard to back the auger out. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: I\'m so lucky....post hole digger

I picked up a Post Hole Digger At TSC with a nine inch auger and drilled 36 holes @ my daughters house in about an hour and a half. Had the tractor idling at about 800 RPM's and it worked really great.

Looks real nice on your tractor. Sure was nice of TSC to get it custom painted to match your tractor like that. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Would you mind sharing how much you paid for that with the 9" auger?

Tom,

Forever what are you talking about? Heavy clay in northern Indiana? Elkhart County, come on. . . . . never heard of such a thing! The glaciers really did this area a favor.

I paid $98 + tax for the auger. Auger pic attached

Re: I\'m so lucky....post hole digger

After re-reading your post I see you wanted to know the total package price. $349 for the three pont with power head and $98 for the 9 inch auger. I just like the convienience of having one and not having to rent it for the day or weekend. Nice for flagpoles, fenceposts, pole barns, fixed outdoor furniture etc.

I know just what you mean. I'm "not a rental kind of guy" as someone said in another thread a while back. I figure if I need it once, I'll probably need it again and by the time I rent it a couple times I've usually spent at least half what it would take me to buy whatever it it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yeah.

Sandy loam supporting corn, soybean, and hay production all around me; two gravel pits within a mile; and I've got a plot that can be dug up as-is and baked into clay tile! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I barely qualified for a septic permit.

Re: I\'m so lucky....post hole digger

John --

That's the unit I bought last year. IIRC, it was on sale for $379 (or maybe $399) with the 9 inch auger. And, as I mentioned above, I had to add another pair of holes in the boom about two inches up to get the auger to clear the ground on my BX-2200.

But it sure beats digging by hand or with one of those gas-operated two-person augers! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd be elated to qualify... "barely" or not. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My next door neighbor had to go with a mound system and I'm thinking I will, too, when the time comes. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: I\'m so lucky....post hole digger

There are three sets of holes on mine. The clearance to the ground isn't too bad. The thing I like is when you pull off the auger gearbox you can use the rest as a boom. I'm gonna get some skidding tongs and hook it up to the auger boom and drag some tree trunks down my hill. I'll let you know how it works out.

It's a good thing you have that tractor so you can put in that dreaded mound by yourself! Just think of it, install your own mound and your tractor pays for itself, well okay, maybe not all of it, but what a justification! Why didn't I think of that 5 years ago?

That is of course if the folks in Allen County will let you!

Re: I\'m so lucky....post hole digger

My boom had three holes in it to adjust the height. In the last hole the auger would barely clear the ground as you said. I used the top hole and the rascal still digs as deep and I have the ground clearance to transport it around. I'll be giving it the real test up at my cabin next week. They don't call the state land I border "Rock City" for nothing. I'll keep you posted. I just bought 10 shear pins for it.
