A friend mentioned he and his wife were going to sell the wife's vehicle - a 2006 Nissan X-Trail Bonavista and since I have been thinking that some day I'll have to replace my 1994 Chevy 4x4 3/4 ton truck (with 245,000 km) I went and kicked it's tires tonight. Nice little unit, very clean, great paint, no dings and low mileage....only 20,000 km. We came to an understanding on the price ($14,000) and on New Years Day I will take possession of it. :)

What is an x-trail bonavista? Is it similar to the xterra?

I had to google it.. But is it more like the rogue.. A cross-over, not an SUV..

The Rogue has AWD (no selector switch for 4x4), and the Xterra has switchable 4x4 (plus low range, and some have locking differentials)..

Oh yes! The truck is still going to be my main vehicle for winter driving. I'll probably license the Nissan for the summer months and park it during the winter.

Since I have, or rather had, just one vehicle I was always concerned about being involved in a vehicle accident and having no wheels and no transportation and then I would be under the gun to find another vehicle and what a PITA that whole situation would be. There's a certain peace of mind that comes with having a spare vehicle and there is really no difference to me personally between having my money in a checking account or having it invested in a spare vehicle that I will need some day when my truck finally does need to be replaced. Besides, I don't think I could find another 6 year old vehicle with just 20,000 km on it and in such immaculate shape! I know zipola about these vehicle but now I will have to educate myself about them!

Having a second vehicle is a good idea. Even with the expense (if one can afford it), it's really handy. After my wife died, I kept her '99 Crown Vic. This allows me to work on my '99 F-250 or help the kids out now and then. Getting a license for part of the year is puzzling however. I hate learning about different makes and vintages of cars/trucks also. Good luck on that.

Not sure how your area works but here in SC if someone smashes up your vehicle their insurance has to buy you a rental till yours is fixed or you buy another. If you wreck your car you can buy rental insurance usually for about $18/yr which will provide the same service. A guy smashed the front in by not yeilding to my wifes highlander. We has a fullsize renatal truck for about 2 weeks. I dont carry rental ins as i have an extra vehicle in the yard all the time.
