Anyone else see this new Class 4-5 offering from IH? Allison 1000 transmission, check, Maxforce engine with 300hp/660 torque, don't know about that one but it is urea free. Tilt hood, four doors and four wheel drive eventually, check.

Sounds like a step in the right direction for a truck in that class.

Don't know about the specific model you mention, but I do know that all NavStar engines do not need Urea to meed the emissions standards.

The transmission in that truck is an amazing product. Mine has gone over 50,000 miles without a hiccup and I've asked mine to do a lot. It feels like a tank transmission. The shifting options, like tow/haul and manual mode make it so versatile & interactive for the operator.
I have a good friend with a landscape business that has 220,000 on his original allison 1000 in a 2500HD with nothing other than oil/filter changes. He has plowed snow with it since new and tows his boat with it, too.

Tilt hoods are great. My 4800 has one and it's a great big truck feature.

I am thinking that IH was looking at GM's medium duty line when GM was looking to sell it. I can see now why IH did not buy into it. When IH manufactures their own engines and can buy Allison transmission's, why bother?

I alway kind of liked the 4500-5500 GM offering somewhat with the tilt hood and all. But, the cabs were snug. With the wider, roomier cab, good forward visiblility, this new offering is more than just a heavy pickup.

I mentioned Allison because, A: they are a good transmission and B: most people prefer an auto. As for myself, I admit that when I am on my way to work in the early am, the auto in my F150 allows me to keep my super size coffee mug in my right hand, lol! Beyond that, I still prefer to do my own shifting.

I happened acrossed the rarest of the rare recently. An FL80 with four wheel drive and a ten speed road ranger. Dang! Too bad I had to give my uncle a chunk of change back on 4-15.

May be very practical and a great driveline combo but man its ugly.

I actually like the 4500/5500 better. 4x4 was already available and the cab was better looking. You also have the option of the RDS 2230 Allison in the 4500/5500 which is found in bigger/heavier mediums, like the F-650/750. The Duramax was also available with 360HP, but that's all academic now. Mismanagement & unions did GM in. IMO, the IH version is a step backwards but it is an attempt to fill the 4500/5500 void.

i'll stick with my GM. they are still available new i'm sure at a much lower price. and i would take the duramax over the 6.4 anyday. i do find it funny some of the folks i talk to always liked to say the 1000 wasn't a true medium duty tranny. now that it is in an int'l i wonder if they'll say the same thing. if i were to go int'l i would go up a level toward whatever they are calling the 4300's now. still like the dt466 and larger tranny.

They do not meet emission standards. IH is buying credits from the government while they keep trying to get them to meet standards. My experience with the IH EGR emission system has not been favorable. I know in NE ohio this past winter, you could not find an EGR cooler for a DT 530 or 570 from December to mid Feb. We had four plows out of service waiting on them most of that time!!!!!!!

I also would be leery of it because , again in my experience, the multiplex electrical system does not get along with road salt very well. I realy used to like the older non emissions non multiplex IH's, but have been very disappointed with what I have seen out of them since about 2002.

I was not aware of this. Pretty much everything one reads about new emission systems is all bad. Perhaps a lot of it is fear of the unknown, perhaps not.

I know firsthand the issues I saw a few years back with the C15 CAT's that my then employer had several of. That engine alone must run what 20k or so? But then the issue may have been the poor service that our local rental location offered, who knows?

It is easy to lament the simplier times but the reality is we need to clean up our act, eh' air.

As for the binder, competition, any competition is good. I think that the class 4 and 5 is an important market what with many people trying to avoid the issues going to a class 6 truck brings on.

You see, I also think if pickup's are going to "replicate" trucks then they ought to be a little easier to work on. The tilt hood on the IH really caught my eye and is the way to go. I just spent a day under the hood on my F150 and when I pick up my parts tomorrow to finish my project, I will spend another day straining to get it back together. I would much rather pop the hood on my FL70 where I can pretty much get at everything.
