I inherited an IH Hydro 86 diesel, 9,500 hrs, and it's been doing a good job. Last time I used it, sometimes after I eased out the clutch the tractor didn't move or moved slow. If I then kicked the clutch in and out, it would grab and go fine. Can anyone suggest the order of things to check, fix, replace?

Every time I run this amazing tractor, I'm nervous about being on the slippery slope to a tranny rebuild, so I'm also wondering if this is an early warning sign.

There is no main clutch. The pedal is connected to the foot-n-inch valve. Seems as if there is a problem brewing with that valve. Buy the hydro transmission OEM service manual if you are going to attempt a DIY fix of the valve.

Thx very much, Rick.

I ordered a manual from Amazon and looking forward to getting it. I've done a lot of reading here and on other forums and appreciate all the members and info. So what does everyone call the pedal for the foot-n-inch valve? dump pedal?

It's called the inching pedal.

This happens maybe once every 6 rows, so it's not often. You guys helped me pinpoint the problem and I ordered the service manual and read everything I could. I'm hoping fouled or maladjusted foot-n-inch valve, but one of you guys figured fouled high pressure relief valve is also likely.
Is it worth trying the foot-n-inch re/re and am I right that it's a pretty big job to go do the high pressure relief valve?

Any other ideas on what I should try? I'll do the pressure and flow tests as soon as I find someone with the gear.

These units are far more complex to work on then the hydro's of today. The adjustments are often more complex and to make one adjustment often means hat more will need to made.
I do believe it is the valve that Rich refered to you but I'd wonder if you are using a good oil for the transmission?

Do you need to use the foot and inch petal that often or can you get by without it?

Normal use would be very infrequent at best!

I'll check the oil we're using tomorrow when I get back there, but in the meantime, I need to ask about use of the foot-n-inch pedal. I use it like a clutch so I can leave the speed - ratio control in position so I get the same speed on my next row. (also for hooking up implements, etc.) When working, I can usually turn without disengaging other than implement work when I need a sec or two to lift the implement. But now I'm wondering, is it better for the tractor to stop / start with the S-R control, rather than the foot-n-inch?

p.s. now that I've been schooled on the name, can I change the title of the thread? :)

The oil in the hydrostatic is AW32 hydraulic oil. The complete specs are at this link (AW32).

We're not operating in a major farming area, so it costs a little more to get stuff from Case, but it can be done.

After reading the prior post I still and will recommend CaseIH ultra hytran even more so!!!!

The foot and inch valve I rarely use and not all for what you are using it for. It is a foot and inch valve as they call it for fine tune backing and hooking up. Even there I can't hardly think that I'd use it but the lever is essential and all that I normally ever drive one by.

We'll get that oil changed soon and tomorrow I'll be giving it a fair go to run off the lever.
Thanks for the help, Art.
