I have an IH 484 with 2200 hrs.* I have an intermittent stuck in forward or reverse problem with the tractor that occurs in 1st or 2nd (most*often ie 90%? in 2nd) when I shift from Lo forward to Reverse or vise versa and the shift linkage sticks in forward or reverse.* The linkage is jammed such that the square tang on the linkage will not fit*through (align with) the square slot*allow the transmission to go*into high range. Sometimes I sense some stickiness and I move to high range and shift through the gears to loosen thing up.
To fix it:
1) Remove both shift levers where they connect to the transmission (9/16" wrench to remove nut and 1/2"to keep bolt head from turning)
2) I manipulate the two disconnected linkages and gear shift to allow the tang in the linkage to fit through the slot to move into high range.
3) Once it is in high range I connect the back linkage temporarily (ie don't put the nut back on) and temporarily front linkage to move it out of the gear it is stuck in (usually 2nd gear)*
4) I connect the back linkage (usually remove the front to connect the back to give me more space)
5) Connect front linkage*
This problem usually occurs when the tractor has been operating for some time (1 hr or more) and there has been a lot of shifting forward and reverse (eg snow blowing or loader work).
I expect it is a common problem with IH tractors and an internet search shows others have the same problem but no one seems to have a permanent fix.* Does anyone know the fix?* Is it linkage related (my dad has done some adjustments to tighten the linkage to remove some sloppiness with washers and such and there is an an adjustment nut which seems to help but no permanent fix). Or is it transmission related (second gear issue?).* We have owned the tractor since 600 hours and the problem has always existed however in the early years a slight tap on the front linkage arm where it connects to the transmission often freed things up ie no removal of linkages required.*
Item # 2 - what are the symptoms of a clutch needing replacement?* Lately when I'm snow blowing in 3rd low I can smell a slight burning, if I shift to second low the smell goes away. alternately if I'm blowing up a hill and the tractor wheels spin sometime because the snowblower is digging in too much (I have trigg chains so I have a lot of traction) i can smell a slight burning smell when I*ease off by making the pull easier by lifting the blower the smell goes away.* Am I nearing the end of my clutch life or is there another issue?* *The clutch has been replaced (I don't have the records on me at the moment but I*think around 1,000*hrs)
All advice is appreciated
Thanks
