Long time reader, first time poster. I have a 1973-ish IH 284, gas 2WD with a 3 pt hitch. The hydraulic pump sits behind the front grill and is directly powered by the engine crank shaft.
Tonight, I lifted my 3 pt mower deck and the pump made a horrendous screech that I have not heard before. It held the deck in the up position until I let it down to mow for a while and then I tried to raise it to make a turn and I had nothing in the lever, no pump noise, no lift, nothing. After a bit, I started noticing a squeaking noise coming from the motor somewhere and put it in N and hopped off to investigate (after stopping and disengaging the PTO).
The noise is clearly coming from the pump and I fear it's shot. While I begin my search for a replacement, I wondered if anyone could comment on the best way to repair it.
I took the front grill off and notice that the two metal lines coming into the pump have many bolts attaching them that look undisturbed since manufacture. The front of the pump, though, has a few bolts that look like they have seen some work. It looks like the pump front cover can be removed, I'm wondering if that means it can be serviced without removing it altogether - because that looks like one heck of a nasty job.
To get to any of that, though, I think the hood needs to come off the frame. There are two large bolts inside the front cowl behind the grill, and three to five where it joins the instrument console. I'll have to remove the "muffler" and gas cap but I think that's all there is to removing it. From there, all of the bolts on the pump are more accessible but I'm hoping just disassembling the pump and maybe pulling and replacing an impeller is all that is needed.
Thoughts?
Best regards,
JE
