I was at a guy's house, and he has an IH 1486 with a V-8 in it. I asked if it was a Detroit, and he said no. He said it was an IH V8. I didn't get up close and inspect, but it looked factory. It was sweet with 2 stacks coming out of it. Is this guy putting me on?

No he is not putting you on. IH built the engine in those as far as I know. In that era several tractors had V8 engines in them. Massey Ferguson built one with a V8 Perkins engine. From what I have read none of the V8's performed really well compared to the straight 6 engines which everyone went back to using.

The IH 1468 had a V8 diesel that was definitely a factory install. The V8 diesel was another way for IH to compete during the tractor horsepower wars of the 1970s. At the same time, IH built a 1466 tractor which had virtually the same horsepower but used IH's 436 inline-6.

The 1468 and the 1568 tractors used IH's D550 V8 diesel engine which also was used in trucks. The D550 V8 engine had a unique feature which allow the engine to idle on four cylinders, instead of all eight, to save fuel. Many people modified their tractors to prevent this. Why? I don't know.

The IH 1468 is a highly-prized, collectable tractor with which many a man has a love affair. I do not care for them myself. Floridahay has it right...a V8 will not pull like an inline-6. (Go ahead Powerstroke and Duramax drivers, make your V8 defense.)

Here is a photo of a 1468 that was on Red Power about a year ago.

We had a fellow in our area that had one turbo'd, one on each stack. When the engine died at about 5500 hours we rebuilt it and the tech was really upset over the break-in on the dyno as he couldn't turn the pump down below 250 horsepower! It was set up to run all eight cylinders instead of the 4-6-8 configuration that they came with.

As I recall, there was a twin-turbo 1468 that was at the 2005 Red Power Roundup in Bloomsburg, PA. The owner put it to the test during the tractor pull. It produced some nice black smoke and some nice noises. I wish that I can find my photos of it.

I attached another photo of an IH 8-banger that was at 2006 Red Power Roundup in Mansfield. The tractor in the photo is the bigger 1568, owned by Richard Lantis. I do not believe that a nicer 1568 can be found.

Massey Ferguson built severial V-8 tractors, 1155=540 V-8 @143HP, 2745=540 V-8 @145HP, 2775=640 V-8 @160HP, 2800=640T V-8 180HP & 2805=640T V-8 @190HP. All engines were built by Perkins. Also all MF built 4X4 tractors were V-8 engines also.
Oliver also built a few models with Cat V-8 engines also. :D

You left one out! Deere built a V-8 in the mid 80's. It ended up in the 8850 4WD. Big power, and not nearly big enough of a fuel tank. It was a HOG. It was replaced with a 6 banger in the next model series. There's still a few "Kinze" 5020 V-8 Cummins conversions around too. They were probably the best V8 tractor by virtue of the fact that the Cummins V8 was the better choice of engine at that time.
