Case/IH 685
Hello, I have 2 questions for people that have owned or operated the IH 1086. I bought a 1981 IH 1086 1 owner, I would consider well maintained with suppost to be 3700HRS. To me the tractor seems very doggy and acts like the governor dont kick in right. When loaded it never puffs any black smoke just drops RPMs. I Have been clipping pasture with a 15ft batwing brush hog and it seems to struggle in my opinion. I have never operated a bigger IH tractor I sold my case/Ih 685 for the 1086 to handle the 15ft brush hog. Also it takes about 2 to 3 full seconds for the brakes to kick in when you hit them ? I did not know if that was normal for them to lag like that ? Any opinions will be appreciated. We used the brush hog on my dads JD 2555 and it handled it better than the 1086, Thank you

Also when I bought it they said it has been sitting quite a bit the last few years. The old man was put into a nursing home but the family still used it some but not alot. When I got it home I changed all the fluids besides the hydraulics, I replaced all the filters, coolant, oil, fuel, air filters, hydraulic filters. I have ran some diesel treatment/cleaner. I was curious how many hours people usually get from there injection pumps, I am thinking it might be getting wore out, or possibly sitting done something to it. It starts pretty good in the cold and has no blowby the old tractor seems solid other than then two issues.

All of our 10 series would put up a bit of black smoke under heavy load.
How much fuel flow do you get past the filters?
Could be some sludge or algae in the bottom of the tank or a plugged line some wheres
I would have a good IH man check it out maybe check the timing and do a dyno test on her.
I've never had a brake lag, I would say you have an issue with the MCV in that case.
Good luck with it she shouldn't have any problem with a 15' bat wing.

+1. I never saw a 10 that would not show a haze when worked. If it will not run a batwing without a fight it surely has something wrong.
On the brake deal, isnt there a screen in the MCV? How is the steering?
I would strongly consider changing the hydraulic oil.

The guy I bought it from said the hydraulic pump was replace not very many hours ago. Time wise I dont know for sure. Everything hydraulic works good steering, loader, remotes. The brakes are strong it just takes like 2 to 3 seconds for them to kick in once the pedal is pressed. There is good fuel flow to the pump, and no water in fuel with new new filters. Im leanin towards a weak injection pump, I will have the timing checked. I just didnt know how long most people get out of there injection pumps normally before they get weak.

I don't have much experience with with those IH machines but I've run plenty of machines with over 7,000 hrs with original pumps that still ran strong and would start getting some black diesel smoke when loaded up heavy. You should start to see some haze or smoke before you loose too much rpm. If you are just loosing RPM with no sign of slight over fueling I would look again at fuel filters, screens etc. If not get that pump looked at to confirm timing and adjustments.

I wouldn't hold much stock in the pump being bad with those hours! Is it the electronic hour meter or the older style mechanical dash? I would try and have it put on a dyno to have the pump adjusted as it is a simple process to get more horsepower out of it or to increase the torque on those engines. If you are used to the deere engines of that period the IH did not smoke like the green design! The engine in those typically went to about 150 horsepower with break-in and yours at 3,700 hours should be seated in. I have seen fuel filters restrict the fuel enough to cause horsepower problems even when brand new!! As far as the brakes, there is some hesitation with being hydraulic, but what you might be having is a sticky valve on the MCV which was mentioned in another post, this valve is the priority valve as to what gets the oil. There are two pumps on the tractor one that does take care of the steering and brakes and one for the hydraulics.
