to buy a International 3500 ( late 60's to early 70's) or an Allis 715b ( mid 80's)
backhoe loader which would you buy and why?
Thanks Tim

All things being equal, both machines in the same shape, for simular price, no knowing much about either one, my initial choice would be to get the newer one. Reason, is it should be easier to get parts, if you need any.

Parts for older machines, can be difficult to find, and expensive.

If the International hasn't had the cylinder seals done, it almost definately will need to be done. I've done a bunch of these. The seals are either the older polyurethane or the fabric style, either of which are not made to last 40 years.

I would check on the country of origin for the Allis, some of them in the 80's can be a bear to get parts for.

Honestly, I'd keep looking... Both machines are basicly orphans. Short of basic maintence items, not much specific to each machine is available. IH construction with possible exception of the crawler tractors is gone. Allis is folded into Fiat somehow and the other poster is right, the Allis machine could be italian or some such.

Probably not what one wants to hear but an opinion was asked.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Scott, A Deere 2010W Industrial w/ 310 backhoe just came available.
Would that be a better choice?
The only other hoes available in my price range are older cases (580?), but they are usually quite used up.
Thanks, Tim

The Deere 2010 tractor - not crawler - has the worst reputation of anything Deere has made before or since.. Neighbor had one for sale by the road for years no takers..

We have an Allis 615 TLB here since 1980 it's a 1970. Parts are available although generic starter rebuilds are cheaper. Reliable old horse.

The 2010 tractor is not particularly well thought of among the greenies... I'm not qualified to offer an opinion there. The early JD backhoes had a hydraulic motor to run the swing. I understand these are hard to get parts for and expensive to repair. They later got swing cylinders like everyone else. If it has cylinders on the swing, and the tractor checks out, I might risk it.

The old Cases are not a bad way to go. (of course I would say that, I have one)
Parts are available and are not terribly expensive as these kind of parts go. Patience is key... I looked for over six months before I found my 580D.
It needs some glass and has some fiddly cab electric problems but it's sound otherwise.

It's a work in progress... I tinker with it till that's tiresome and then I dig with it till I'm fresh again. Right now is a good time to be looking for a machine as everyone is downsizing and selling off excess machines. I probably should have waited longer than I did but looking backwards is pointless.
