in my previous post i forgot to add that it is a 12 hp 38 inch deck several years old i bought it used and i believe it is a model 1250 but that could be wrong

I assume you are talking about the belt tension pulley on the mower deck. Looking straight down upon the top of the mower deck, go from where the spring is attached to the pulley tension arm, to the right about 10 inches directly toward the right hand spindle. There should be a hex head bolt protruding about 2 inches above the deck. The right hand end of the spring attaches to that bolt. If there is no bolt, only a hole, you have lost the bolt. It is a standard 3/8" hex head bolt about 2 1/2 inches long which along with a couple of nuts can be obtained from any hardware store. Good luck.

Thanks I very much appreciate the advice I'll try and locate or replace the bolt tomorrow
