It's hard to believe that there are in fact many otherwise seemingly rational people who fall for these scams every day, and lose thousands of dollars trying to collect their "prize". Unfortunately, I see it all too often.

What's sad is that there are those who will fall for this and end up spending thousands of dollars to these scam artist thinking they are going to get rich. From what I've read, the most likely person to fall for these things are the elderly and widowed women. They give far more than any other group and are the most likely to be taken advantage of.

So true. We helped clean out the home of an elderly neighbor. For years she had talked of helping her kids solve their financial problems as soon as she won a sweepstakes. That was all she ever talked about.

We found hundreds of pounds of sweepstakes mail and in many of the envelopes, she had stored the real bill she intended to pay when she won. It was also clear that each Christmas when she cleaned the living room for entertaining her family, a year's mess of documents was moved to the pile in the garage and never recovered. Looking through that mess I found heirloom pictures of her grandchildren, and of her own ancestors that family members had sent her. Also over $200 in real checks from stock dividends, insurance refund, etc. The huge mess of sweepstakes correspondence was her only filing system.

Much of it was from the Reader's Digest sweepstakes. She had many simultaneous subscriptions. We also found records showing much of her income was spent on 'award fees' and for buying useless stuff to qualify her for sweepstakes. This was her full time occupation.

There's a huge industry here in the US that preys on confused elders - you don't even need to look overseas.

It is unfortunate, and I don't mean to step on anyones toes, however, I know firsthand about an elderly woman that made a single donation to one of the television ministries. That started her down the path to giving her entire life savings in less than 2 years to them. The ministry would call and send letters asking for donations, and she would always oblige with either cash or check. She wasn't forced into the donations, but they were very persuasive in getting her to part with the little that she had. In some ways, I think that they made her feel guilty if she didn't donate. I never heard any of the calls, but I did see some of the letters and they were very good at plying money from the elderly. They made it sound like you were guaranteeing your passage into heaven when you donated. She died penniless and there wasn't even enough money for her funeral. Friend, neighbors, and relatives took care of that.
