New Holland TC40D HST 4WD FEL/BH
We started having problems with our starter on the New Holland 40D. It would click and click and finally start. What a pain.

We took the started off and had it serviced/repaired. He did find some problems and fixed it. When we first put it back on it seemed like it would be fine ..... then, click....click ..... click

I came and searched the forum. Found some interesting comments and some suggestions.

Here is what did the trick:

I found many posts that explained how all those "safety" switches cause a plethora of bad connections and voltage drop. The solution, aside from by-passing all those switches, was to install a relay to do the actual starting. I purchased the relay from O'Reilly Auto Parts for $6.99.

It is a 30 amp relay with four spade terminals.

I connected one to the battery positive terminal, the other side of this circuit to the starter. The other two terminals connect to the wire comming from the key and the other to ground/negative battery.

I was able to plug the wire that used to go to the solenoid directly onto the relay. I then used a wire to plug onto the other relay terminal and plug it into the solenoid where the original starter wire was.

The positive and negative were connected accordingly using additional plugin terminal ends on the wires.

Now, when we turn the key .... it cranks right up!!!!!! and - all the safety switches are still in operation !

Thanks to all that gave the suggestion - it works :)

Nice work!! I work at a truck shop and new freight liners have a "clutch switch". It causes up to 50 percent of no starts. there is a computer controlled device that makes you wait 15 seconds +/- between starts to save on the starter and let it cool. Doesn't help anything either!!! These new trucks won't start. Its looking like newer tractors Are the same way
