Massey ferguson 231S
I have to chalk this up as stupid tax. I was hooking up my 3pt tiller and had to move the tractor about an inch to line it up. I let out the clutch in low range low gear with the parking brake engaged and I heard a POP and that was it. No motion now in any gear, even with the diff lock pedal engaged. The clutch and trams act normal as does the PTO. I'm praying that there is a shear pin or some such thing in a drives shaft that can be accessed without tearing the whole rear end down. I'm getting a service manual sent now, anybody have any words of wisdom, seen or heard of this happening before. the tractor is about 6yrs old with 300hrs of mostly medium, light bush hog work.

I put this in the general repairs forum but thought it would also be wise to take it to the experts here!

I've done that on our Ford 4610 several times and actually drove off but I never heard anything pop. The shop manual will help you figure it out.

I'm not that familiar with your specific tractor you've probably found the weak link in the drive line. Are you brakes internal and on the final drives? I wonder if there is a drive coupling on the transmission ouput shaft to the rear axle pinion that has sheared? I hope I'm wrong! I'm guessing and I don't want to scare you but if that's what it is, I believe the lift cover has to come off and the rear axle housing has to be separated from the transmission. It's a small tractor but it shouldn't be that hard to do if you have a place with a concrete floor to work on it.

Search up "massey 231S video" on youtube . See if that solves your problem.

Thanks for the replys guys, I was able to D/L the parts manual and have a P/N in hand for the pinion shaft coupler which according to other searches is the designed weak link in the system. I'm researching the repalcement of the coupler now. I'll post my findings to this thread so future idiots (like me) may find the complete answer.

No need to download anything . All part diagrams and part numbers are on AGCO's website.

http://http://www.agcopartsbooks.com/PartsBooksN/login.aspx?region=NorthAmerica

Select view books in the Guest User area then pick Massey Ferguson as the manufacturer and type in the tractor model and your set.

If this is the correct coupling the price does not look bad . I have ordered from these people with 1st rate service.

There is a coupler (1871924M1) that's pinned to the transmission out put shaft and mates with the pinion shaft in the rear axle. Since it's a built in "fuse" on the drive line, there is probably a method in the shop manual that will help you change it out with a minimum of effort.

Don't be too hard on yourself. We've all been there!
