So earlier I elected to have these crates moved rather than destroyed, thinking they would come in handy as a shed or a playhouse. Well, these eyesores had to get moved again as the housewarming party is this Sunday. I was planning on destroying one of the three, then moving the other two about 150 yards back into the woods to where the tractor garage is.
The question was: how to do it with a BX-24 and nobody to help you.

I'm somewhat proud of the 2x4 support beam idea, especially because I was able to manipulate it by hand as I approached the crate to push the top up a little bit. That let me set the parking brake and get some chocks to hold the front end up so I could get under it with the toothbar. I then rocked it toward the tractor and used the impact driver to drive some screws through the 2x4 into the top edge of the crate. I was actually able to move this thing about 30 yards this way. Then I started to tip REALLY bad, and as some of you know, my tractor has been on its side before. I went down a short incline without too much problem, though the front of the crate did scrape the ground. But my trail is just too bumpy and narrow. Lifting it width wise would have been much easier. In fact, I did lift it width wise to move it enough so I could grab it length wise. The trail is just too narrow to haul it that way, however. It is a little hard to tell in the photos, but the whole thing is really in the air. I gave up and am going to sledgehammer the things tomorrow.

Would dragging work better? Interesting problem indeed, glad you didn't qualify for the award:D

Would dragging work better?

I have had some serious loads and really big things moved around my farm. What the czechsonofagun man said is helpfull. I got a few round metal fence posts and stick them under the loads. I drag with the machine and have someone else move the poles back to the front of the load as we pull. Works well and is MUCH safer. Just take your time, wear steel tip boots, and watch those fingers!

That's what I was thinking. I once moved a 10' x 12' storage building quite some distance by lifting one side just off the ground with the FEL, then drug it backing up to where we wanted to place it.

Sorry, Singlecoil, only dead people get Darwins. You didn't even manage to kill your tractor. Better luck next time.

You might consider pallet forks. Very handy.

I think we all see the lesson in this!! :D :D

I would have used a rope instead of a 2x4 beam!!

Actually another vote to drag it.

I thought about the rope, but then the crate could have fallen on the tractor.

These things are pretty flimsy so I'm pretty sure dragging them would destroy them. They are just not worth the hassle. I have so much left over wood; from 2x4's to 2x12's to plywood that it is going to be easier and sturdier to just build what I need later and burn these lame things in the fireplace this winter.

Man, you are right about the playhouse thing. That crate would have saved me a lot of time and trouble if I had it sitting in my yard :D My little girl really wants a playhouse.

another vote for dragging - even though that thing is light, man does your center of gravity look high.

Thanks for having the guts to post this.
