Let me start off by saying this website is really helpful! I just bought a property and I have a big problem comin into the spring! I have 15 acres of lawn open space and nothing to cut it with! I am in the market of buying something but I don't know what! I don't want to spend a lot of money and I also don't want to take a long time cutting. If someone can please help me I would appreciate it! Thank you

Not too helpful for your mowing problem, but if it was mine, it would become 1/4 acre of lawn and 14 3/4 acres of field.

Same here, either make hay or grow corn, lawn is a little bit around the house, not the whole 15 acres!!!! :)

I see you've gotten a 3rd not so helpful reply (we mean well but sometimes our attitudes seem a little unfriendly to new posters - welcome aboard!), so I'll add this:

What is the goal with this 10-14 acres of 'excess' lawn??? Is it really lawn, or is it just something you want to whack down 2-4 times a year to keep the weeds and trees from coming up in it? Are you looking for a _lawn_ or are you looking for a meadow that is occationally maintained?

I'd think it silly to mow a 14 acre lawn every week, tho many here probably do so. :) If you just want to bushhog it a few times a year to keep it in fit condition until you decide something productive to do with the land, then I understand that, and you are looking for a rough-cut mower - commonly called a bush hog or Brush Hog. They chop through anything including small tree saplings, can move pretty fast, but leave a rougher look behind them than a 'finish' or lawn mower would.

To keep it in line look for an older tractor with a bush hog type mower on the back. (that's a 3 pt single blade mower). You should be able to find something like a Ford NAA (Jubilee) in good very usable shape for around $2500 you might even get it with a mower for that. If you want nicer, newer, bigger the price will go up from there. but that's a place to start.

If you really want it to be lawn then look at some used golf course equipment. But expect to pay starting at about $4000.

i agree with the thought about letting alot of the lawn grow into a feild ...i used to mow 7 acres and it just became a major hassle, took up most of a day to mow , weed eat, trim ... just wasnt worth it , not to mention wear and tear on the mower and fuel...i finally let all but maybe 2 1/2 or so acres grow up..makes life alot easier and frees up valuable time..lately with the price of fuel i may even cut back on the 2 1/2 acres

Welcome aboard, Michaelm!
Before you make a decision about buying something, let's take an inventory of what you think you might need. Looks like a river plain passes through town, and looks like Irene was not kind to the river plain, judging by the town's website. Are you down near the water, or up in the hills? What do you like about your land and what would you change, if you could? Will you be planting any of that land? Will you be constructing or repairing any buildings? Building or maintaining any roads or driveways? Looks like you might get a fair amount of snow on occaision. Not trying to be nosy, just trying to determinewhat size tractor and if you are going to really need 4wd or an FEL once you get established in your place and start maintaining it.

I have an 11 acre country lot but only mow the front 5 acres of it...with the price of fuel today is costs me PLENTY just to keep the 5 acres mowed. The back 6 are left as a field with trees and I cut trails for our ATV's on that part. I used to chop off the back 6 with a farm tractor and bush hog but during the last 19 years...why bother? I let it grow for wildlife and my neighbors bag deer in season. Do you have a reason you want to mow the entire property, like your house is set back and you want to have a good view?
