Ford/1920
Hi all. I am a newbie here and have a question. I inherited my late husband's Ford 1920 tractor and have learned to operate, and love doing so as well. My question is this... I have been trying to find out what type of Hydraulic oil to use and are there different types? As I have often said the only dumb question is the one not asked... Can anyone help please? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The Nh 1920 is a great tractor. I had one for a few years but just recently traded it for a larger tractor.

NH specs M2C134D oil for their tractors hydraulics, tranny, rear and front final drives, and power steering. 134d oil is a universal transdraulic oil. I ran the universal transdraulic oil that TSC carried ( it lists equivalance with 134d and other popular specs.. like JD303) and never had a problem.

Power steering, front diff and tranny/diffy/hyds are 3 different fill locations. Dipstick for the dif/tran'hyds is by your right foot, kind front on the operators platform. Fill is on the rear of the hyd cover as I recall. hyd Filter can be seen if you look down between the tractors right fender and body.

A few of us here have/ have had 1920's.. let us know if you have any more questions.

Univerasal fluid should work just fine, but make sure it says it meets the Ford or NH 134d spec. Some don't.

SouNdguy, I have a questuion for you re:motor oil. I see the manual calls for oil that is SF/CD rated. I read every oil bottle at NAPA and can't find a 10W-30 that carries this rating. I only found one brand of 15W-40 that complied. What type oil did you run? I was going to run 10W-30 this winter, maybe not now. Have the ratings for oil changed since 1996 when my manual was printed?

The ratings go up as newer oil specs come out. I'm not sure what the current spec is.. but if it superceded sf/cd it is good to go.

Also.. that engine likes 15/40 I think it mentions that in the manual.. not 10/30 I ran a 15/40 valvolene fleet diesel rated oil from napa in mine for the few years i owned it. The oil that NH caries for that tractor is also a 15/40.. and is in nice expensive 1, 2.5, and 5 gallon jugs. Get a diesel rated 15/40 oil that meets or exceeds sf/cd.

I had oil pressure in below freezing weather instantly with 15/40.

That's good info thank you. As far as below freezing goes, heck that's shirtless weather for us Packer fans. I'm worried about the below zero weather I'll be moving snow in. Still, I'll have to reconsider my 10w-30 decision. 15-40 maybe the way to go. thanks again.

Thanks to all for your info.. I am enjoying the tractor. I now know where to turn for answers to my questions... This has helped tremendously. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

There is an oil temp chart in the manual.. and if you will be doing work in sub zero temps, there might be a lighter oil it calls for.. so a winter change may be needed... Since I'm in florida.. I used the 30' to 100' range oil.

good luck, and have fun..that's a great machine..

Woodlot, Walmart has Shell Rotella T synthetic for $12.83/gal. It is 5w-40 weight oil. I have been using it in my 1920 since the first oil change I did (bought tractor used 15 months old/ 72 hrs) at 145 hrs. I can't comment on cold weather starts as it resides in a heated garage. It seemed fine last winter in -10 degree temps. Bill C
