My -used to be invincible - 35 ton Huskee log splitter quit. No longer retracts. Called Huskee, ordered and received the 'O' ring replacement kit for the valve. I've never been in a hydraulic valve before but I ignorantly convince myself, how hard can it be? I lay everything out on a towel as I dismantle. Everything is in order for re-assembly. As I pull the shaft from the valve a 1/4-5/16 ball barring plops on the floor.
I'm at a loss. Where did this thing come from? My best guess is in the end of the shaft where it would a activate the 4 bal bearings exiting the shaft.
Resists reassembly in such fashion.

What kind of valve is it?

Prince. Brand, Energy, etc. model number?

JJ I appreciate your prompt response. Thank you.
I'm still at a loss to place this thing. I might have to just set it aside until Monday when I can talk to a Huskee tech. They have been quite informative when I know what question to ask.
Man, do I hate not being able to put something back together.
It affects my manhood.

Just curious....what pointed you towards the valve itself as the culprit?

It started as retraction in the verticle would not stay on until the ram was fully retracted. Next day it wouldn't retract at all - even in horizontal position. Oil was leaking from the cap at the end of the valve. First call to Huskee said the 'O' ring was gone.

That is probably a detent ball, and it keeps the valve locked into position when you are returning the ram. The ball should fit in the end of the rod, with a spring.

There are 6 steel balls in the valve .

Spool valve.

1 steel ball in the relief valve group. Item 14

Detent adapter.

1 at the end of the spool .437 in dia. Item 11
4 in the detent .218 in dia. Item 3
