I have been sand blasting my backhoe over the past week or so. Blast a bit, needle scale a bit, wire brush a bit, blast a bit. The blaster has been working sporadically. It would clog up and have to take the nozzle apart and clean it out.

Well, it started working worse and worse. Just couldn't get the sand to come out of the nozzle. Heck, couldn't get to to come out of the hose with the nozzle off! Took the sand / air mixing valve and stuff apart - broke the 1/2 nipple and had to REALLY take it all apart. Just as well, there was about a large double handful of insulation, Kleenex and paper towels inside the blaster. Stinking rodents have been trying to set up house inside there. They have done it before, so I store it with the fill plug held up. They must have done it all over the past couple evenings. Industrious little beggars, but I still want to croak them all off!

Just had to vent....

Once I noticed our a/c in our car wasn't blowing much air and on high speed it made a terrible vibrating noise. So I took the fan out and found out the squirrel cage fan was full of chunk dog food. The mice had a full winters supply there and in the air intake before the air filter.
Another time we had the vibrating again and found the fan was unbalanced because of a mouse head stuck in a slot in the fan. I had to feel around to find the rest of the mouse. The squirrel dog I have now does a pertty good job of killing the mice and rats now.

I had quite a few mice in my garage at one point; so I set out a bunch of traps. After catching 13 mice in a week, I bought a box of Decon.

I was in a hurry when I got home from the store, so I threw the box on the workbench in a far corner to keep the kids out of it. A few days later I grabbed the box to set out the individual packets around the garage. Those little buggers had eaten into the outer carton and ate most of two of the four packets of decon.

I didn't see any more mice for a while.

Mornin Iplayfarmer,
I used to open the packets for them also, but I learned that they like that Decon so much that you dont even have to do that, as you said they will eat right through the package !;)

John, I made a simple sifter for my sandblast sand I get from dirt roads etc. it a 12 X 12 4 sided box with a screen stapled at the bottom, works great and as for the real sandblast sand ? Its expensive and play ground sand can be bought cheap or just a truck load of masonry sand works if you have a way of not letting it get contaminated with weeds, cat poop and that way its real cheap
I have a Lindsay pressurized blaster, I have had it for over 30 years
Jim:)

Jim,

I used to use playground sand and double sift it. Once with a box sifter and then with a double layer of screen in the funnel. About 2x a load (100#), the blaster would stop with a rock in the nozzle. I figured that the time spent monkeying with it, wasn't worth the hassle. Also, the health risks of silicosis are bad. I tried the "black blast" it's residue from coal fired plants. Very regular in size, very sharp and comes in plastic bags. They are also a bit less dense than silica sand, so I can only get 1 1/2 bags in the blaster. It gives a more agressive tooth, which is good for equipment, but not for sheet metal. But, it cuts paint and rust off about 2x the speed of regular sand. Here it is 4.49 a 50# bag. With my "booster" compressor running I can blast for a good 30-40 minutes and use only 75 pounds. I do have the sand feed turned down pretty low, but it still cuts like a champ.

Did the stabilizer legs, pads and control tower yesterday and today. (Had to cut off the pad bolts and press them out of the pads and cylinders. What a hassle. Took 37 tons on the press to pop out the nub in the one cylinder. After all the nubs were out, straightened the pads back to about flat. The legs are hollow and were full of oily dirt with mouse houses and pellets. Took a good 2 hours to get all the stuff out and had to use a hole saw to pop a 1 1/2 inch hole in the end for washer access. (Checked the diagrams and the ends of the legs are supposed to be open -- thanks prior owner!)

I just finished assembling my new pressure pot sandblaster (in the livingroom because the garage is too full). #22011 from Eastwood. It will compliment my new 60" wide cabnet blaster. Will be getting dirty soon!

I have two mouse traps at home. Tigger and Ozzy, my two cats. I'm actually allergic to them , but it's worth it. No more mice, squirrels, or chipmuncks left on my property.
