It's a Stihl thing. Their latest/greatest fuel/oil caps have a flip-up handle, then turn to take off. When you put them on you gotta pay close attention or they ain't sealed. That's how those "other" guys spill stuff on their leg.

I don't typically have any problem with mine. Yes, you have to double check that they're closed, but they've never failed on me. My dad's 036 has dumped gas on him more than once with the old style cap. I do like not needing a scrench to fuel up. I'm sure I'd like the old style too, that's what's on my Shindaiwa 488, just saying that it's not the end of the world. Won't be trading it in for a Husky because of them.

Since we are on the subject of fuel caps I like the ones on my MS170. The caps are female and the tank is male. You can fill the tanks up to the brim and when you tighten them down gas or oil does not gush out. If the accidentally fill the other to the brim you will make a mess.

I have dumped fuel or oil on my pants at least once with every saw I have ever had going back to the 50s. It's not a matter of the type of cap.

as for the flippies: I don't have a problem with them but still don't see the "why?". Looks like a solution to a non-existant problem. I have seen people claim it was because of needing to use a tool to tighten the screw on type. That is the purest of BS. To my mind, anyone applying a scrench to a fuel/oil cap is abusing the equipment - never did it myself and have never had a cap come loose during use.

At least the new caps have abig black mark on them to show how the cap fits right on. Both caps will hve the black bar pointing at the power head when it drops into place, 1/4 turn and close it. Still don't think it is any faster than screwing on a cap which can be done without even looking at it.

The old Stihl saws are hard to tighten by and once pressure builds up in the fuel or oil tank you can't get them loose. I tighten them by hand then about 1/8 turn with a scrench.

Here is a flippy cap. I new to them but I have not had a problem with them the 3 times I used them. So far I like them.

I liked the old wrench style caps better. I also like the idea of male tank, female cap to minimize mess.

A buddy was helping me saw this winter and broke one of my flip caps. Not sure how he did that?? He didn't say. Maybe he didn't fully understand the "righty tighty, lefty loosy" theory.

No one _needs_ a scrench to to tighten a fuel/oil cap. I don't know where that idea got its start. I been using saws of all brands since th 50s and have NEVER had a finger tightened cap come loose. I even ahd an ex loggers Johnyred that he had hacksawed a slot to beable to use a scrench. I ran that saw for some 10 years and never had to do more than finger tight.

Applying a tool to those type caps is abuse of equipment.

If I recall correctly, it is Stihl that recommends tightening gas & oil tank caps with the screwdriver to 'prevent coming off due to vibration & fuel pressure', or some such.

Whether or not that ever happened to anybody, and whether they got hurt & the lawyers sued Stihl, I don't know. I have never had a hand-tightened cap come off either.

Hey now, "abuse"? I didn't say I was reefing on them with the scrench. I have had them come off, and I would say that spilling gas on the ground qualifies as abuse of the environment. I lightly tighten them with the scrench to ensure they stay seated properly. I'm glad they never come off for you, but unless you're really sure how much additional torque I'm applying, please don't say I'm abusing my tools. What if I have weak fingers and you have really strong fingers? Maybe we're torquing them the exact same amount, but I'm using a tool?

Furthermore, if using the scrench qualified as abuse, why on earth would they put a slot for the screwdriver in the cap??
