I have the ST230p and its surging again, cleaned the carb in the last month, fresh gas, and it had been running ok, but tonight it started surging really high again - last year it was doing this, and the engine grenaded, 29 days out of warranty. The dealer finally fixed it at his cost, replaced the head, but never figured out why it blew up.

When I say surging, it's already at max throttle and starts whining real high, without the auger or drive engaged. Everything I know about small engines tells me surging is carbs right?

I paid top dollar for the top model 3 years ago, but this thing is just so-so, seems my Craftsman blower was pretty much bulletproof.

Ideas?

I hear you re the Husq blower, I agree, it sounds like a carb problem.
I bought one not quite three years ago and I too wish I had kept my old Sears. It's the 330P hydrostat so it's the upper end machine, was darn near $3K with tax.
First year the lift cable for the chute broke and it's almost on it's way out again. Traction is terrible even with the chains I added. The bolts that hold the handle on won't stay tight, they're the self tapping ones, even when tight the handle feels like it's about to break. I added a reinforcement on each side for the handle to hopefully preclude breaking and replaced the self tapping bolts with regular bolts, flats and Loctited them in.

Goes thru shear bolts like you wouldn't believe. Reverse is terrible slow and have had to replace the auger belt mind you not using the rip off dealer price of $55, found a kevlar replacement for $22.

Sorry for hijacking your post, just had to vent...........Mike

Actually, its seems like a governor problem: spring location, vane broken, linkage broken disconnected or jammed if it has a conventional type limiter. Look there.

Tend to agree. Due to the fact it blew up once.

Thanks all for the replies will tear it down and see if I can figure out the linkage, will the inoperative governor allow the throttle to open wider or just dump more and more fuel In?

it will allow it to rev higher, which is what appears to have happened to yours, there is a BS governor adjustment guide on the internet that walks you through adjusting them, and let me tell you from experience 1/8" of slop is enough to make the governor not even work

It is easy to check the static governor adjustment. Essentially the throttle shaft at wide open throttle and the governor arm as well. Loosen the arm, ensure both are in position and retighten the arm. In addition, inspect the throttle shaft to know that the top of it is secure to the shaft and shaft that it is holding the plate tightly as well.
