I am looking at a JD 5420 with cab, heat, air and loader. I have not called the seller yet as I would like to get some opinions beforehand. The tractor will be used mainly with a snow plow on the loader arms. The 5420 had the 521 and 541 loader. The ad says 521 with quick attach bucket but the pics clearly showed the 541. Does the bucket attach the same on both? The machine has less than 1300 hours. Should I be looking at anything specific when evaluating this tractor? What would be a fair price? Thanks very much.

I had a 5520, which is just the turbo version, and it was a great tractor because I took excellent care of it. Some people had clutch issues because they kept the wrong free play amount but even that was not a widespread issue. If cared for, a great tractor and one of Deere's best. Search TractorHouse for pricing on the retail level.

IIRC parking paw can break and require a split to fix, but this only happens when operator puts the tractor in park while is its not completely stopped. Cold start sensor failure is common, causes a fuse to blow and tractor not to start.

521 loaders were for 2wd tractors, 541, for MFWD tractor, but could be used on 2wd. Both used JD 500 series connection for the bucket, hooks at the bucket top and pins at the bottom. Optional was skid steer style attachment. 541 could be MSL (Mechanical Self Leveling) or non self leveling too.

2wd verses MFWD, transmission option, will make a big difference in price, 1300 hours are low hours for this model

I've got the 5520. Great tractor. I had the parking pawl issue but it wasn't due to the common problem. Mine was the gear that the pawl engaged into. It broke some teeth on it. Probably a defective gear. Mine manifested due to the hydraulic clutches not fully disengaging. Anyway I'd go for it without hesitation as long as the seller has taken good care of it.

I just purchased a 5420, I’m fixing it up now & am very excited to use it. Simple & strong, a big step up in power from my last tractor.

Good choice! I wanted a 5X10, or 5X20 series when I bought my 2030. They were over budget for me

I hate that tractor prices have outpaced land & inflation. I was forced to use a 33 hp tractor for many years... now I’m at the right size. Thx for the support!
