We just bought 160 acres next to our house and for the last 3 days I have been working it and I came to the conclusion - I need a cab! Hot, nasty, dirty, etc...

I went and looked at a used JD 2750, but it was $18K and 20 yrs old and the hour meter was broken. I then went and looked at new ones - man, that will ruin you.

The 6415 is really nice, but won't fix on my current trailer. I settled on the 5525 with a cab, 4wd, etc, etc. Man, it rocks. I passed on putting a loader on it, going to be mowing and baling with it mostly. Ordered a HX15 to go with it - they had just sold their last one but will have it next week. John Deere credit rocks, the dealership knew I wanted it by the weekend and I have already put 10 hours on it.

So, for all those hold outs like me - life is too short not to have a cab. Now, I did keep my 4720 for the smaller work that I can't get the cab into and since it has a FEL, I can use it for my jobs.

Also, the ePTO is awesome. I am running my MX6 on it right now until the HX15 shows up - I can run it in ePTO easy enough and it saves big time on fuel.

I need to pull the pics off my camera to post a couple.

Yeah, since I'm in my late 50's, I'm starting to think cab as well. My area is four seasons weather, i.e. hot in summer (high 80's with moderately high humidity) and cold in the winter (high 20's low 30's, with chilling rains) with mild springs and falls.

It seems to me that a cab will extend the useful periods on the tractor by several months, and enable one to remain at work more hours per day, shortening various projects considerably.

Let's see those photos as soon as possible. The 5x20 series is definitely within my purchase range.

Once I went with a cab, I'll never go back. I think I'd rather be missing a wheel than my cab. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Hey, how do you like that 4720? They will have a cab available late this fall. I'm seriously considering going with one of those. I just don't know how well the 4720 will compare to the L5030HSTC Kubota. What's your thoughts on that?

I really like my 4720. I only have 50 hours on it and I had a couple little problems when I first got it. The gas door fell off, the fuel sender was bad, and I had a couple leaks (turbo return line, and the oil feed line). It has plenty of power. The HST trans rocks - I am debating getting the full cruise control setup. It has the set it and forget, but a resume feature, etc would be nice.

The rumors of the 4720 with a cab got me back down to my dealer to look at them and then I decided that a larger one for hay and I really need a bat wing mower with all the property now.

I did not compare the 4720 to a Kubota, my dealer is so good I don't want to know how much more I might be paying for the JD over the Kubota. Also, every time I have looked at the Kubota I like the ergonomics of the JD better.

Which cab tractor do you have at the moment?

Ok, I was a bit envious of the 4720, but now I'm totally jealous of an A/C cab on a 5525. I'll have to hit the lottery to get one!

What neck of Texas do you live in?

Give us some pic's.

If you don't mind a have a few questions. You all seem to be very experienced tractor owners and operators, and are speaking about the tractors i am considering. I am the opposite. I have never owned a tractor but have operated an old long colar shift a bit here and there.

I have about 300 acres of land in Maine on the coast. It is hot and humid in the summer and real cold in the winter. 100acres or so is open field, ponds, etc, and the rest is woods. I am interested in purchasing a new or almost new tractor to take care of the fields and do some significant landscaping of our ponds, lawns, damns, etc. The majority of the fields are bailed by someone else, but they leave lots unmowed so the majority of the field mainanence would be cleanup, bushogging, etc.

I have been considering a 4720 for a while now but am worried it might be to small. Also, I like the idea of a cab but the 4720 w/cab will not allow the use of a backhoe, so, i have many questions.

First, is a 4000 series tractor large enough for the property.

Second, i really like the cab idea, what are the disadvantages of having a cab?

Third, I think having a backhoe would be very helpful for my landscaping maintanence needs, what do you think?

Finally: can you plow with a tractor? i would like to avoid putting a plow on my new HD truck.

thank you so much for any input.

Maybe, depends on how much time you have to spare. With the amount of land you have, I think you'd be better off with a full size utility tractor rather than a compact. If you are only mowing in the nooks and crannies remaining from a hay operation, maybe a 50 HP and 6' shredder would fit the bill.

Some cabs interfere with backhoes. This should be the first thing you ask a salesman if you want a backhoe.

Backhoes are great but are very pricey options. Depends on the amount of backhoe work you have and your schedule. I would love one.

If a tractor has a front PTO option, a snowblower is what many buy. Usually a blade of some sorts can be attached to the front end loader (FEL). I'll let the northern folks answer this in more detail.

Ask lots of questions and determine what you want to do with the machine. (and what you may want to do in the future)

You might start a new thread with all of your requirements/jobs to do. You'll get plenty of people recommending their brand. Some have more merit than others.

Good luck....Kyle

Umpteen years ago when the family had dwindled down to about three brands of equipment and tractors (red & green & the real orange); we tried to order a four bottom two-way plow.
Red needed about a month to fill the order out of Ft. Wayne, IN.
Green had 6 in Dallas, TX. and would have one on the farm within a week.

Guess who made the sale. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
They've been like that for 35 years or better.
