hydraulics dip stick

I know my eyes are bad but has anyone painted or marked the hydraulics dipstick in any way so you can see the oil on it? I have a bear of a time trying to read it. I've heard about a dye you could add but I'm kinda of leery of putting anything odd in the hydraulic fluid.

Get a good quality magnifying glass and check the fluid in strong sunlight-the hydraulic fluid will reflect and glisten, easy to read.

pull it.. wipe it off real good so it has a dry sheen.. stick it and look, front and back. should see the shiney wet part pretty easilly.

some people drill a small letter series drill hole in the middle of the stick to see the oil spot.

wiping and resticking has always worked for me...

All but clear fluid, silver stick and bad eyes...I'm doing pretty much all suggestions now. I was just hoping there was an easier way to see it.

that's why I rely upon a clean stick .. that shows up a shiney oil on it pretty good.. but you have to pull, wipe, and restick to make that work.

my eyes have been bad since grade school...

my glasses are so thick that ants fear me if i look down while walking around outside..

I blacken my dipstick with a Sharpie.

Lay the stick on a paper towel. Oil on the stick wil show clearly on the paper. You are probably wiping the dipstick dry before reinserting it to check anyways.
