hydraulic valve question

I have a spring project of adapting a used mini backhoe to my tractor. The hoe does not currently have hydraulic outriggers and I will be fabricating them. I know that typically and individual single spool valve is used to control each side but I would think a 2 spool valve could also be used. If that's true, I have a chance to buy a new 2 spool valve at a very good price. The problem is the seller doesn't know anything about it. There are several numbers on the valve and, since I haven't physically seen it yet, I believe they are all part of the casting mold. The casting also has the letters "AH" separately which I think might refer to the manufacturer but I cannot find any information about it after spending several hours of searching. The numbers on the valve are: 222627, 374888, 406110 and D04S08CR. I was told that each spool is spring loaded to the center. Is there any way short of connecting this valve up completely to determine what kind of operation it really has? I've attached a couple of pics if that helps.

You can use air to test for valve function.

Both spools in center position does airflow from P to T? If yes you have an open center valve.
With spools centered do you get any out out of the work ports? Yes or no

Will you need power beyond capability from this valve? If yes you should a PB port and T port. Are the ports labeled?

Looks like one valve has a detent. I don't know if it's gonna be a float or a Pressure detent, although it should still work for you if it's open center.

Can you take some better pictures of your valve and someone might label the ports for you.

I do not see a relief valve, so it is probably a closed center valve.

To test for closed center, put air in the IN port, and nothing should come out the OUT port. If you move the levers, air will come out one of the work ports.

If air does come out the OUT valve with levers in neutral, then it is an open center valve.

I definitely would not use water pipe fittings on any valve.

I also see seven ports, which normally indicated a hyd valve with PB, or two IN or two OUT ports.

If this the last valve in a two valve open center hyd circuit, the last valve would not need a relief valve.

Anyway, do the air test and let us know the results.

John, the number 222627 is a number that shows up on some Vickers hydraulic valves. I can't tell you anything about it, just happened across this web site while searching for information on a Vickers 222627. I'm searching for the exact same reasons your are, converting an old hoe from a Vermeer trencher to three point hitch for farm tractor. That number most likely is a mold or cast number, not the model number of the control--that's what I'm trying to find......
Hope that's worth something....

Leroy, Thanks for the reply. I decided a while later that I didn't want to spend that much time and effort on this hoe. I ended up selling it to a fellow in Canada who drove 4 hours to get it, for the same price I paid. A year and a half ago I moved to a property that had a lot of broken birch trees that needed removing. So I ended up buying a new WoodMaxx backhoe.
