I have a chance to pick up a couple of hydraulic pump/tank units out of an old factory. They are headed for the scrap yard if I don't take them so I can get them for cheap. I'm thinking just the tanks alone would be worth having when the time comes to build my splitter, I'm not opposed to elec if it would work out. I know the motors are 3ph but that can be worked around.
What do you all think?

Get them! After you get them you well see all kinds of use for them, if not sell them..

I told the kid doing the demo that I want them, I just have to arrange a time I can pick them up. They are only around the block from me. :)
I'm thinking a hydraulic bender, I can turn my 20 ton press into hydraulic, ummm, I'm sure I can find uses for them :)

It depends on the pump size for the HP required to run the pumps.

Whatever the HP of the electric motors is to run them, you will need about two times that for gas engine.

The binder and press are good use. I have a 20 ton press that I changed over to hydraulic with a 3 1/4 or 3 1/2 cyl. I use a 5000psi foot pump to drive the cyl, but haven't taken it up to the 5000psi yet. It sure sets the press down at 3300psi, haven't had the balls yet to go higher.

OK, I got the tanks and a little more :D
I got a smokin' deal on a 4.5" x 30" x 2" cylinder and a 3" x 6" x 1.75" cylinder today, along with a valve I think will work for my log lift.

You may have some good stuff there if you can put it to work.

I asked a friend about the HP difference of a single phase and a three phase, and he said use a single phase motor with same HP. His explanation was that the three phase is just more efficient.

If you only have a gas engine, figure about double the HP required.

I would cap or plug all the fittings, and clean everything before removing any of the components.

Wow!! Now you can have a bender and press + a log splitter. If the hyd pump can be hooked to a gas motor then use the other for the bender and press.
