Hello all !
I would like to post a ? for any one who have an expirience in dealing with JD Co. ower their prices for parts ... Oring kit $ 68 .. rod @ $280 this is for dipperstick cylinder ..Bore 2 1/2" Stroke 21".. for backhoe JD # 8 mounted on JD 1050 ( 1989 ) new cylinder is $800... I am a woodworker so I am new to this world of Hydrolicks and tractors .. world of its own I may add , but I have read so many of you talking about O ring kits for $15- 20 .. maybe the posts were from the 1960'... I didnot look at the date of the posts..sorry
In a desparate effort to meet the deadline for arrival of two hives of honey bees I ruined the dipperstick cylinder trying to rip some stumps and clear enuff land to bring them in ... White M. NH .. (from MA) .. Bee heaven for them to go about their bussiness . I hope ..we lost so many that this is a last shot.. if they cannot survive here then We are all doomed ..
But! back to the cylinders .. I have the tools and I am willing to learn how to do it , but if I cannot shave a little with block plane I am lost and what I get from the deelership so far is beond what I could imagine from a tractor world ..@ least the one I go to visit .. they have more toys for kids ( 3 shelvs ) then parts for the real thing and if they have it you better take a baby aspirin before you ask for price .. but maybe.. it is just me.. being cheep ? ( I buy local and US made IF availleabl)
This is not to offend anyone this is just a jittle BOP valve to share with the community .. I hope you have a good Memorial day weekend and please fly the flag for the ones who gave their life for what we have today..
Can you help me or you send me straight to the doctors ?
God bless and take care ! J.

Sorry, but a bit difficult to follow your 'story'; - but bottom line, you need to fix or replace a backhoe cylinder?
Is it only leaking oil, or is it bent?
When you say you "ruined" it, sounds like a bent rod.

Hopefully we can get some answers together for you.

I suggest one be on the mechanical side of "average". Don't know how average you are. :D

The purchase new might be your cheapest bet. But taking it to a hydraulics shop the second best. Doing the work yourself, if you can find the parts, certainly possible and a reasonable search of the posts here on TBN will give you some good reading for understanding how to do it yourself.

How "into" hydraulic work have you been? - for many years, or not so many?

Very hard to give an answer when not familiar with what you are comfortable doing in your own shop. So much involved, such as experience, tools available, sources for parts, interest, etc. Will you fill us in?

Where are you at? Maybe a TBN member is close by and knows the area shops.

Have you looked at Surplus Center for a replacement cylinder? Need to know the specs of yours, and possibly find a duplicate or one that will fit.

I would take it to a hydraulic shop rather than the JD dealer. If you don't know of a local hydraulic shop ask someone in the excavation business, they will. Cylinders are somewhat generic rather than JD exclusive so a good shop may have some alternatives for you. I will warned you that hydraulics are expensive though.

Try Baum Hydraulics for you o-rings and such. I was able to buy kits for my backhoe stabilizer cylinders for next to nothing.

jansr,
From reading the thread I agree with others to find a good hydraulics shop and pay them to fix it. They know how to fix the cylinder and you can spend the same time doing what you know how to do.

You may find that changing the cylinder is cheaper than rebuilding one this small.

Thank you all for your replys. I was not arround for couple of days. I made the desition to buy a new cylinder to put the implement back to work and repair the bad one latter . The implement uses the same cylinder for boom , so I end up with spare and hopefully learn something.

Another place for parts to rebuild is Motion Industries, they have all types of bearings seals packing and are reasonably priced.
