Remember me, still new to the JD arena. I have the lawn tractor 455. I have lost lifting capability on the mowing deck. The lever moves fine, but the deck doesn't move. Any ideas? I can hear the hydraulic pump actuate in both directions. Could I have a leak? Would the oil level affect that?

I assume you have checked the hyd oil level and it is okay.
I responded to your PM to me with this same question and offered some solutions. Hope you get it figured out.

Starting with the most obvious, have you checked to make sure the lifting brackets are attached to the deck? Those pins have been known to slip out.

Next, check the limiter. That is the crank just in front of the seat the sets your depth of cut. According to the manual, you should crank that up to the top when not using the deck, to relieve pressure from the lifting brackets. If you do that, and forget, the deck won't go down -- don't ask how I know that.

ok, the oil level is ok. Here is an update. The cylinder moves with the lever. The pins. and brackets are inplace properly. The crank on the floor is stuck with the level all the way up. When I got this tractor everything worked fine. A few weeks ago, I raised it some to top it out just under the highest level, but the lever that fold over to crank with is gone, so I was using my hand. Now it is stuck all the way up, but the actual deck is all the way down or at least really close. Any ideas why, or how to turn this thing back down without breaking it? Also one more, is it possible to unscrew this all the way out of its socket? I don't know how it is attached at the other end.

Thanks

Don't know how you got the limiter all the way up and the deck down. I'm not home to look at mine, but you might try this page:

JD Parts to see what it ought to look like.

Probably need to get in there and fix or repair it.
Remove the seat, and the fender deck, and you will be able to sort out the problem.

got it fixed. I took the pressure off the cylinder and was able to turn the crank with a large pair of channel-locks. It does seam as if I lost some travel in the deck's movement up and down. But that is the least of my concerns. it moves not, and that is the important thing. Thanks to all of your help.
