Hydraulic pump noise only when clutch is engaged on '76 Deere 2040

Hi everyone, I am having an issue with my '76 2040. The hydraulic pump recently began making noise while I was working and I figured I needed to add some fluid. I checked the level and it did need fluid, so I added some. Now it makes noise only when I have the clutch engaged and work the rockshaft, steering or loader. I've read other threads related to noise on a 2040 but haven't come across anything mentioning noise only when the clutch is engaged.

3 years ago I drained all the fluid and changed both the screen and filter. This tractor is used on a hobby farm so it doesn't see a ton of use. I wouldn't think the screen is clogged again so quickly, but I guess I shouldn't rule it out. I just though I'd check in here before going through the trouble of draining the fluid to check the screen.

Meaning that the screen was clogged before, and can you tell us what the screen was clogged with? metal filings, hyd. hose parts/pieces ?

Sounds like maybe the hyd pump is making the noise.
Can you get a pressure gauge hooked up to check the hydraulic pressure with clutch engaged and without?

When I cleaned out the screen before it was sludge. Pic attached.

I do not have a pressure gauge set up but a neighbor might. I haven't had to work on this sort of thing before.

Although your 2040 is open center I would advise to change hyd filter and check/clean sump screen. When you state clutch disengaged/engaged are you referring to traction or pto clutch being engaged????

Note:

Closed-center hydraulics became available in on the 2040 in 1978 at serial number 266750.

Whoops, not sure what I was thinking, but I used the wrong terminology. I should have said disengaged since its when the clutch pedal is down. Not sure how I goofed on that one

That crossed my mind as to what you meant, and was going to ask but didn't. Thanks for the clarification.

Now, am wondering if the throwout bearing is what you may be hearing.

Between Thanksgiving and being sick I haven't been on here for a little while. I don't know what a throwout bearing is, can you explain in layman term?

Also, is there a way to edit the thread title and correct the info about the clutch? I'd like it to be more clear for anyone else only reading the first post.
